Vice President Kamala Harris has long faced criticism for her apparent inaction since being tasked with addressing the “root causes” of an ongoing border crisis.
Since returning from her recent trip to Guatemala and Mexico, she has faced a renewed and bipartisan backlash for several missteps — including a harsh review from Fox News Channel contributor Lara Trump.
“We’ve been to the border”
Former President Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law asserted that the vice president’s performance in an NBC News interview was an “absolute disaster,” describing her perceived abdication of the border issue as “embarrassing.”
As for the referenced interview, NBC anchor Lester Holt pressed Harris on her decision not to visit the U.S.-Mexico border, but she responded with a dismissive laugh.
“At some point, you know, we are going to the border,” the vice president said. “We’ve been to the border. So this whole thing about the border. We’ve been to the border. We’ve been to the border.”
Lester dug in, correctly noting that Harris herself has not visited the border since taking on the assignment earlier this year. The vice president’s rambling reaction has since been widely derided.
“And I haven’t been to Europe,” Harris said. “And I mean, I don’t understand the point that you’re making. I’m not discounting the importance of the border.”
“It is a ridiculous thing”
Lara Trump spoke for others in the Fox News audience who were “pretty perplexed” by what they saw during the NBC interview.
“I guess this is what happens when you have a border czar who is closing in on 80 days since she has been tasked with addressing the problem has yet to go to the southern border,” she said, according to Fox.
Lara Trump went on repeat the “haven’t been to Europe” portion of the interview, criticizing Harris for the botched effort to shift the focus away from her record on the border issue.
“Are you kidding me?” she asked. “What does that have to do with anything? And ‘we have been to the border.’ Who? Who has been to the border between Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, the two people apparently in charge of the country. It is a ridiculous thing.”
Noting that even the Guatemalan president called out the Biden administration’s “lukewarm message,” Lara Trump concluded with a stark assessment of the White House: “It’s a really sad situation; they have to get a handle on this. I don’t think they want to go to the southern border, guys, for one reason because it would draw more attention to the absolute crisis that exists there.”
