Left-wing group seeks to keep Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene off the ballot

Since her election in 2020, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has been one of the Republican caucus’ most high-profile members.

Yet according to The Hill, a left-wing group called Free Speech for the People is working to have Greene removed from the ballot.

Group says that the 14th Amendment bars Greene from running again

The organization has filed a complaint with the office of Georgia’s secretary of state alleging that Greene is constitutionally ineligible to run for re-election.

Specifically, it points to a provision of the 14th Amendment which states that no individual “who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress … to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same.”

While that rule was created to exclude former Confederate leaders following the Civil War, Free Speech for the People insists that it applies to Greene.

It alleges that Greene helped to facilitate the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill and thus has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion.”

Greene was forced to provide sworn testimony about January 6

The Hill reported that Greene’s campaign responded by going to court to have the challenge thrown out but was unsuccessful.

Obama-appointed federal Judge Amy Totenberg ruled against the campaign this week, leading some members of the GOP to complain of political bias.

Among them was Georgia-based Republican strategist Jay Williams. The Hill quoted him as saying that Totenber “is incredibly liberal, so it doesn’t surprise me that she would do that but I was very surprised they even let that thing go through.”

One outcome of Totenberg’s decision is that Greene was required on Friday to testify under oath regarding the events of January 6, making her the first lawmaker to do so.

Greene is not the only Republican representative to see her candidacy challenged, as Free Speech for the People’s website states that North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn and Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar are being targeted as well.

Last month, a Trump-appointed judge threw out Free Speech for the People’s challenge for Cawthorn’s candidacy, after which the group announced plans for an appeal.
