It has been abundantly clear in recent days that House Democrats, led by Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) and with the backing of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), fully intend to investigate President Donald Trump’s response to the coronavirus crisis — quite possibly with the intent of launching another impeachment effort against him.
The revelation of another potential probe of Trump was harshly criticized by conservative talk radio host Mark Levin, who suggested that it was because of the distraction of the initial impeachment effort led by Schiff that House Democrats missed and were unprepared to deal with the new coronavirus during the early days of the pandemic, the Washington Examiner reported.
Levin: Impeachment distracted Dems
Rep. Schiff recently called for the formation of a 9/11 Commission-style investigation into the Trump administration’s preparedness and response efforts related to the coronavirus outbreak. Schiff, like others on the anti-Trump left, have accused the president of downplaying or ignoring the coronavirus pandemic in its early stages.
Speaker Pelosi has endorsed the idea and has also created an entirely new House committee charged with providing sharp oversight of the administration with regard to coronavirus, particularly the disbursal of relief funds approved by Congress.
Levin, during an appearance Thursday on Fox host Sean Hannity’s program, said, “With respect to the Democrats investigating the coronavirus, that’d be like Jack the Ripper investigating the failures of the London Police force.”
“The fact is that Adam Schiff, who is chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, was running an impeachment coup for months,” he continued. “He should have been on top of the China matter. He should have been on top of the virus matter.”
“And so I want to know what Adam Schiff knew and when he knew it and when he started to hold hearings,” Levin added. “This guy is a disgrace, he is a reprobate, and he should stop giving aid and comfort to the enemy. First, it was Russia, now it’s China.”
Trump blasts talk of probe
Levin’s criticism of Schiff’s intended investigation into Trump’s response to the coronavirus crisis followed Trump’s own remarks earlier on Thursday with regard to what appears to be yet another partisan “witch hunt” aimed against him.
During the coronavirus task force briefing at the White House, Trump said, “I want to remind everyone here in our nation’s capital, especially in Congress, that this is not the time for politics, endless partisan investigations.”
“Here we go again. Have already done extraordinary damage to our country in recent years. You see what happens. It’s witch hunt after witch hunt after witch hunt,” he continued. “And in the end, the people doing the witch hunt have been losing, and they’ve been losing by a lot. And it’s not any time for witch hunts. It’s time to get this enemy defeated.”
“Conducting these partisan investigations in the middle of a pandemic is a really big waste of vital resources, time, attention. And we want to fight for American lives, not waste time and build up my poll numbers, because that’s all they’re doing because everyone knows it’s ridiculous,” Trump added.
Levin is correct that Democrats like Schiff — focused on impeachment as the pandemic took root — have no room to talk about Trump’s response to the coronavirus outbreak given the national distraction of their own creation that dominated the end of last year and the beginning of this one. Similarly, Trump is also absolutely correct that now is not the time for another partisan probe, but odds are, Schiff will stubbornly push forward with one no matter what.
