Liberal activist groups join in push to prosecute Big Tech leaders

Liberal activist groups and some Democrats are joining efforts to prosecute Big Tech leaders over their business practices that seemingly monopolize the industry, the Washington Examiner reports.

The American Economic Liberties Project, a liberal think tank, is leading the charge, focusing on practices such as insider trading and fraudulent ad practices.

“Facebook’s longstanding track record of unethical and potentially illegal behavior deserves criminal sanction,” the group tweeted, citing Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s support.

Above the law

“There’s an understanding in the public and the government that large corporations like the tech companies have operated above the law for a long time and so going after individual CEOs and executives is key to correcting bad behavior,” said Sarah Miller, the executive director of the American Economic Liberties Project, according to the Examiner.

“The new crop of antitrust leaders in the government are really committed to aggressively enforcing the law when it comes to the Big Tech companies, and their executives in particular, in ways we haven’t seen in a long time,” Miller said.

Another recent post noted the group’s plans for a future lawsuit against Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other executives.

The details

The group detailed a recent letter from Warren to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding five specific areas of concern related to leaders at Facebook.

The five key areas included two different wire fraud concerns, securities fraud, perjury (lying to Congress), and insider trading.

The attack from liberals, along with ongoing concerns from conservatives against Big Tech, could signal that change may be coming soon regarding the practices of large social media companies that most agree wield far too much power.
