Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh provided a rare update on his ongoing cancer treatment, and it’s not great news.
Limbaugh revealed on Tuesday that he’s in his third wave of cancer treatment and that it’s “kicking my a–.”
“For the last seven days, I have been virtually worthless, virtually useless,” he continued. “I haven’t left the house. I haven’t done much of anything except just try to rest and relax.”
The longtime conservative star first announced the news of his advanced-stage lung cancer in February.
He explained after the fact that “I’ve really tried to avoid becoming the nation’s most-listened-to cancer patient,” declining to dwell on his health and giving few updates for his listeners.
However, he acknowledged on Tuesday that his listeners were “overdue” for an update on his condition.
“Folks, it occurs to me that I have not spent much time in recent weeks updating you on my medical status,” Limbaugh said. “I’m probably overdue for that, given that it has been while and that these are extremely challenging times for me medically. Nothing that millions of you haven’t gone through or aren’t going through.”
The beloved radio host said that some of the symptoms he is experiencing are “skyrocketing” heart rate, high “caloric burn,” and severe energy limitations. He continued that the difficult side effects were “just the cost” of attempting treatment.
“It’s the price that you pay if you make the decision to go ahead and do treatment to try to prolong your life,” he said. “I’m doing extremely well, all things considered, the fact that I’m even here today.”
Though Limbaugh’s update was sobering, he said that “Just waking up is a blessing,” remarking that “every day I wake up and the first thing I do is thank God that I did.”
As for the future of his show, Limbaugh said that “My intention is to be here as often as I can. My attitude is this, and the reality is, the day is gonna come where I’m not gonna be able to be here. I don’t know when that is — and I’m hoping that it is months, years.”
He explained that his “energy limitations” prompted him to tell producers last week that “at any moment we may need to start rolling a best-of-show here or guest hosts. I hope that that doesn’t happen … But I do feel the need to keep you informed.”
