Lindsay Graham says invasion of Taiwan would be ‘nightmare for China’

China has reacted angrily over House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan, with the communist dictatorship releasing a video boasting that its armed forces are prepared for war.

However, one Republican lawmaker recently insisted that any invasion of Taiwan would prove to be “a nightmare for China.”

Lindsay Graham says Taiwanese will “fight for their freedom if necessary”

That’s the argument South Carolina Sen. Lindsay Graham put forward during an interview on Tuesday with Fox News host Brian Kilmeade.

“I mean, what they’re trying to do through the videos and this action is to basically demonstrate their ability to surround the island. Well, it is an island, so it can be surrounded,” Graham acknowledged.

“But what people have to understand is there are 25 million people plus in Taiwan who are ready to fight for their freedom if necessary,” he added.

Graham went on to contend that Pelosi’s visit does not represent “a change in Chinese policy” on the part of the United States. Rather, he insisted that the House speaker’s trip “is just reinforcing the relationship between two democracies.”

“So it’s one thing to do military exercises. It’s another thing to go into a country and try to take freedom away from those who have experienced it,” Graham continued.

The South Carolina senator then brought up the difficulty that Russian forces have had in prosecuting their invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

“It’s not going so well for Russia and Ukraine,” Graham pointed out. “And if you think Ukraine has been hard for Russia, Taiwan would be a nightmare for China.”

Chinese official says military “will never sit idly by”

However, that hasn’t stopped Chinese officials from making ominous sounds about Taiwan, with Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian telling reporters on Monday that his country is ready to act.

“If Pelosi insists on visiting Taiwan, China will take resolute and strong measures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the New York Post quoted Zhao as saying.

“Those who play with fire will perish by it,” he threatened, adding, “We would like to once again admonish the US that we are fully prepared for any eventuality and the PLA will never sit idly by.”
