While many Americans are chafing under COVID-related rules, they aren’t the only ones facing government-imposed restrictions.
This week, Newsmax reported that Austria is preparing to crack down on those who remain unvaccinated for the coronavirus with harsh lockdowns preventing residents in two regions from leaving their homes, except for approved purposes.
Newsmax said residents of Upper Austria and Salzburg will be on effective house arrest until they roll up their sleeves and get immunized.
Chancellor wants more
Under a statute that is set to take effect on Monday, unvaccinated individuals are limited to purchasing groceries, seeing a doctor, and engaging in other necessary business. Otherwise, the law says they have to stay at home, at least until they agree to get the shot.
Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg announced the move on Friday, and said he would work toward imposing a similar rule across the entire nation.
The new COVID-19 rules are even more onerous than the restrictions imposed earlier this fall by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D), which mandated that individuals present proof of vaccination before entering many public venues.
Opposition from the left
According to Fox News, those regulations have aroused opposition from the city’s local Black Lives Matter chapter. Chapter co-founder Chivona Newsome says the rules unfairly impact Black Americans.
“Although Mayor Bill de Blasio ran on progressive values, nothing in his tenure will attest to his campaign promises,” Newsome said, according to Fox News.
The activist went on to argue that the mayor’s requirement on proof of vaccination hearkens back to papers that emancipated slaves were forced to carry.
“The September 13th vaccine mandate is racist and specifically targets Black New Yorkers,” Newsome complained, according to Fox. “The vaccination passports are modern day Freedom Papers, which limit the free will of Black people,” Newsome added.
“The vaccination mandates infringe upon the civil liberties of the Black community,” the activist declared, as Fox reported. “It’s more than where we can dine or enjoy entertainment, it will result in loss of income.”
Newsome also alleged that “social distancing and mask requirements resulted in Black New Yorkers being brutalized and arrested while their white neighbors received masks and refreshments.”
