Louisiana’s Democratic governor signs bill limiting transgender athletes

While many on the left oppose laws that restrict participation in women’s sports to biological females, one Democratic governor recently signed a bill that does just that.

In a move sure to infuriate the Biden administration, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards signed a bill on Monday that bans transgender student-athletes from competing against girls.

Edwards previously vetoed a similar bill

According to the Daily Wire, “The Fairness in Women’s Sports Act” mandates “that schools designate intercollegiate and interscholastic athletic teams according to the biological sex of the team members.”

It also requires institutions to “provide that teams designated for females are not open to participation by biological males.”

The website noted that although Edwards previously vetoed a similar piece of legislation, he decided to sign the bill given the overwhelming support it received from state lawmakers.

USA Today quoted the governor as saying that “it was obvious to me after two years it was going to become law whether or not I signed or vetoed the bill.”

Republican state Sen. Beth Mizell sponsored the legislation, and she insists that it is necessary to ensure that young women can compete on a level playing field.

“Women have worked too hard for too long to get to the competitive level we have attained to now face an unfair playing field,” she told USA Today.

DOJ official says limiting transgender athletes is “wrong and it’s against the law”

While transgender advocates suggest that hormone-suppressing therapy erases the advantage biological males hold, critics say the dramatic success seen by athletes like University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas suggests otherwise.

Dr. Ross Tucker is a sports physiologist, and he told The New York Times that “Lia Thomas is the manifestation of the scientific evidence. Tucker added, “The reduction in testosterone did not remove her biological advantage.”

Louisiana’s new law isn’t likely to be popular at the White House, as the Biden administration has promised to crack down on rules which limit the rights of transgender students.

Fox News reported in April of last year that Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke said in a video that banning transgender athletes from playing in girls’ sports is “wrong and it’s against the law.”
