One left-wing comedian has some regrets about efforts to impeach President Donald Trump.
According to Fox News, comedian Bill Maher, host of Real Time on HBO, announced Friday that he thinks Democrats’ attempt to impeach Trump was a “horrible” mistake.
“It just emboldened him,” Maher remarked in an interview with filmmaker and fellow Trump-hater Michael Moore, Fox reported.
“A horrible thing”
According to CNBC, House Democrats voted to impeach Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of justice in December 2019 after weeks of hearings on a July 2019 phone call between the U.S. president and the leader of Ukraine. Trump was later acquitted in a Senate trial, as CNBC noted — and according to Maher, that only “emboldened” the president.
As evidence of such, Maher pointed to the recent firings of several inspectors general, saying, for this reason, that the president’s “impeachment turned out to be a horrible thing,” as the Washington Examiner reported.
The most recent of these ousters — that of State Department Inspector General Steve Linick — has garnered numerous critical headlines after it was unveiled that Linick was investigating Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who had suggested to Trump that Linick be fired, at the time of his dismissal.
Pompeo has since said that he was unaware of this fact and asserted that he asked that Linick be fired because Linick was “undermining” the State Department, the Examiner reported separately.
“I went to the president and made clear to him that Inspector General Linick wasn’t performing a function in a way that we had tried to get him to, that was additive for the State Department, very consistent with what the statute says he’s supposed to be doing,” the secretary of State told The Washington Post, according to the Examiner. Of course, Maher didn’t mention that.
“The news is all COVID”
From there, Maher’s guest jumped into an argument that President Trump had actually “bullied” former Special Counsel Robert Mueller, the prosecutor behind the infamous Trump–Russia collusion investigation that ended in no charges for the president.
“He bullied Mueller, he threatened him, and Mueller got scared and wouldn’t even bring him in to be interrogated, didn’t bring him before the grand jury, didn’t bring in Don Jr.,” Moore said, referring to the president’s eldest son, according to the Examiner.
Maher agreed. “Just the impeachment, you know, I mean, if I could do it over again I wouldn’t,” the HBO host said, according to Fox. “Now he can conduct this war on accountability and nobody even — it barely made the papers. I bet you people are watching this and going, ‘Wow, I’ve never heard that because the news is all COVID.'”
Is Maher really suggesting that media companies are wrong for focusing on a disease that has killed nearly 100,000 Americans rather than phony charges against a president who has repeatedly been exonerated? Give me a break.
