One bizarre indicator that high-profile Democrats can use to measure their on-the-job performance is whether or not a bulk of the left-leaning mainstream media continues to provide cover for them or if those reporters tap into long-lost journalistic integrity and begin to ask questions.
According to Fox News, Vice President Kamala Harris is experiencing the latter as of late, as she’s facing increased scrutiny over her mysterious absence since being tasked by President Joe Biden last month with taking a lead role on the escalating immigration crisis at the southern U.S. border.
At last count, it has been 18 days since she was thrust into the position and has yet to hold a press conference or an official meeting on the current status of the border crisis.
What’s going on?
Originally, messaging from the White House indicated that Harris would be directly involved with solving the crisis happening at the southern border, which was one of the first public acknowledgments by the Biden administration that the situation was serious enough to warrant a high-profile response.
However, days later, the White House began to walk back the idea that Harris would be in charge of border issues, insisting that her new role was focused on the root causes of why so many migrants are fleeing from the “Northern Triangle” countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.”
Recently, NBC News ran a headline covering the situation called, “Confusion clouds Harris immigration role,” a topic that was later followed up by an NBC News reporter during a White House press briefing.
“The Northern Triangle, which I’m sure you’re aware of, is not the same as the border,” Psaki said in a response to a reporter who asked for clarification on Harris’ actual role.
Harris’ seeming lack of getting anything done — or at least explaining what she’s currently doing to tackle the issue — has sparked a number of media outlets to question what’s being done, if anything.
Republicans demand answers
It’s not just the media who want to know what Harris is doing about the insanely impactful immigration crisis at the border. According to the New York Post, a growing number of Republicans are demanding that Harris — and Biden — take a tour of the border to get a feel for the level of urgent response the crisis obviously requires.
“They don’t have the backbone to come see the misery that their policy is giving to these boys and girls, babies, men and women, who take that trip,” said freshman Rep. Burgess Owens (R-UT) during a press briefing held in Texas last week.
“To President Biden and Vice President Harris, get some backbone. Get some compassion. Come down to the border to see what mess you’ve made down here that we’re trying to fight to save our nation,” Burgess added.
Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) issued an especially dire warning about the surge of illegal immigrants crossing the border, saying that they “don’t stay and congregate in border towns. They’re on their way to communities all across the country,” adding that the impact on safety and use of public resources in towns and cities across America will soon be felt.
Only time will tell if Harris — and her boss — can find time in their schedules to grab a first-hand look at one of the most dangerous and concerning crises facing America right now, but one wouldn’t be advised to hold one’s breath in anticipation of it happening anytime soon.
