Former President Trump was often criticized for his claim that members of the mainstream media are “enemies of the people.” Yet according to Newsmax, a new survey suggests that many Americans agree with him.
Conducted by Rasmussen Reports between July 7 and July 8, the poll found that 58 percent of voters believe to at least some degree that the “enemy” label fits.
Among that number were 34 percent who say they “strongly” agreed with the characterization, compared to just 26 percent who “strongly” disagree.
“Fake news” also a problem
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Republicans were far more likely to regard the mainstream media as an enemy, with 76 percent agreeing with the term. Yet those feelings weren’t restricted to members of the GOP, as more than 1 out of every 3 Democrats said it fit as well.
“Fake news” was also seen as a serious problem by 83 percent of voters. This included 74 percent of Democrats and 82 percent of independents, with the figure rising to 92 percent among Republicans.
Meanwhile, just over half of voters expressed a belief that the media is slanting its coverage to benefit President Joe Biden and his agenda.
Only 37 percent of respondents indicated that they trusted political news coverage whereas 43 percent said they did not. An additional 20 percent were uncertain.
Biden complains that reporters are too “negative”
The belief that reporters are favoring Biden doesn’t seem to be shared by the president, as he has recently lashed out at the media for not being positive enough towards him.
In an article published last Wednesday, the Washington Examiner’s White House reporter Naomi Lim wrote that Biden has “lost patience” with journalists due to “negative” questions.
She pointed to an incident just before Independence Day in which Biden expressed frustration over being asked about the potential consequences of his planned troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
“I want to talk about happy things, man,” the president complained, adding, “It’s the holiday weekend. I’m going to celebrate it. There’s great things happening.”
Biden also bristled last month before boarding Air Force One when he was asked about his meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, remarking, “Look, to be a good reporter, you got to be negative. You got to have a negative view of life, OK? It seems to me, the way you all, you never ask a positive question.”
