Majority of Americans believe nation is ‘less united’ under Biden: Poll

President Joe Biden came into office with a promise to be a unifying leader.

A recent Fox News poll, however, found that a majority of Americans believe the nation is actually “less united” under the Biden administration than in years past.

Details of the survey

Respondents were asked to choose whether they believe the nation had become more or less united since Biden took office. Just 37% chose “more united” compared to a majority — 54% — who said “less united.”

The survey included responses from 1,002 registered voters between Sept. 12-15 and on a variety of Biden-related issues.

Reactions were more evenly split on matters such as whether Biden “cares” about the American people or is “honest and trustworthy.” Nearly half of all respondents said that the president has the “mental soundness” needed for the job and 45% called him a “strong leader.”

Participants were also asked for their opinion on his response to current issues. He received 55% approval for his COVID-19 response, 50% approval on the economy, and just 36% approval of his Afghanistan policy.

Contrary to a number of recent polls, this survey handed Biden a 50% approval rating, which was one point higher than his disapproval.

Breakdown of approval rating

About 1 in 4 participants who approve of Biden’s performance credited his COVID-19 response. Another 19% cited his “positive” approach to the presidency, 15% said he is “better than Trump,” 9% credited his “presidential behavior,” and another 9% pointed to the economy.

Among those who disapproved, 22% cited his incompetence, 19% pointed to the recent U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, 13% said they personally dislike him, 8% blamed it on the economy, and another 8% cited his COVID-19 mandates.

The Fox News survey represented a more positive outlook on the Biden administration than a number of recent polls. One recent Quinnipiac University poll conducted at about the same time found his approval rating had slipped to just 42%.

Biden’s approval rating has been trending downward for months, and the decline accelerated in the wake of the recent Afghanistan debacle. Of course, Americans have expressed displeasure with his response to various other issues as well, including the economy.

An average of recent polls compiled by RealClearPolitics found that Biden’s approval rating stands at 45.8%, or nearly 4 percentage points lower than his average disapproval rating.
