Man kills himself after ramming U.S. Capitol barricade

A deadly incident took place at the U.S. Capitol barricade over the weekend.

Fox News reports that after driving his vehicle into the barricade, a man shot and killed himself.

The incident

It took place early on Sunday morning, a little after 4 a.m, at the Capitol barricade located at East Capitol Street and Second Street in Washington, D.C.

There, a man drove his vehicle into the barricade causing his vehicle, according to U.S. Capitol Police, to become “engulfed in flames.”

At this point, the individual exited his burning vehicle and began randomly firing his weapon. Then, as authorities were approaching him, the man turned the gun on himself and fatally shot himself.

No one else was injured during the incident.

What we know so far:

The specific identity of the individual is not being released. But, U.S. Capitol Police have put out a statement indicating that the individual behind the incident is a 29-year-old man from Delaware who had a criminal history.

Authorities still do not know the motivation behind the attack.

The U.S. Capitol Police say that man’s background does not suggest, at least so far, that “political ideology” motivated him. The U.S. Capitol Police also say that “it does not appear the man was targeting any Members of Congress.”

There are several investigations into the incident that appear to be ongoing. The U.S. Capitol Police are investigating the man’s background, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the man’s death, and the D.C. Fire Department is looking into whether the man started the fire himself.

It’s not the first time

It was last year, in April, that a previous incident took place at the Capitol barricade, one that was even more deadly than the one that occurred over the weekend. One officer died and another was injured after a 25-year-old man from Indiana rammed into the barrier, exited his vehicle, and began attacking officers with a knife. Police did kill the suspect.

Green was found to be a follower of National of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. He was also found to have fallen on hard times. But, the precise reason why he attacked the Capitol police is not known.
