As Joe Biden scrambles to reboot his faltering presidency, he shouldn’t expect any life rafts from Joe Manchin.
The Democratic senator from West Virginia has said he will not be part of any climate change spending between now and the midterms, the Hill reported.
Manchin kills Biden’s climate agenda
Biden cannot hope to pass anything without support from Manchin, whose vote is critical in the evenly divided Senate. Manchin killed off Biden’s grab-bag of progressive policy goodies, “Build Back Better,” in December.
But Manchin appears no more inclined now than he was then to sign on with Biden’s radical agenda. Considering that Biden is expected to become a lame duck after November, it looks like the Green New Deal is dead.
Manchin says he will support using the filibuster-proof reconciliation process to lower prescription drug prices and subsidize healthcare coverage, but that’s a lot less than what Democrats want.
He also won’t support passing tax reform to make the wealthy pay, as Biden puts it, their “fair share.”
Biden, who pledged to end fossil fuels on the campaign trail in 2020, has continued to push his green agenda despite a crippling energy crunch that has driven inflation to its highest level in decades.
Manchin goes his own way
Manchin said he is “very, very cautious” about passing more federal spending after inflation rose 9.1 percent over the last year.
A statement from Manchin’s office said, “Senator Manchin believes it’s time for leaders to put political agendas aside, reevaluate and adjust to the economic realities the country faces to avoid taking steps that add fuel to the inflation fire.”
Needless to say, Democrats aren’t taking Manchin’s opposition well. The party is desperate for policy wins to show off to their base, which is demoralized by Biden’s tanking poll numbers and conservative Supreme Court victories, especially the end of Roe V. Wade.
Democrat shill John Podesta accused Manchin of having “single-handedly doomed humanity” by blocking climate change legislation. Just a touch dramatic…
Manchin could be doing Biden a favor by preventing more reckless spending that would only worsen inflation. Either way, it’s pretty clear Manchin has no desire to tie his fate to a failing president, and who could blame him?
