Republican Matt Gaetz (FL) grilled a tight-lipped top FBI official about the agency’s handling of the Hunter Biden laptop during a congressional hearing on Tuesday.
In a shocking moment, Gaetz entered the notorious “laptop from hell” into the congressional record, the Washington Examiner reported.
Grilled on the laptop
The House Judiciary Committee hearing went on for three hours, but Bryan Vorndran, assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Division, provided few answers to persistent questions from Republicans about the laptop and other FBI controversies.
Gaetz began his dramatic questioning by simply asking, “So where is it? The laptop?”
“I’m not here to talk about the laptop,” Vorndran shot back.
But the official conceded that he has no idea where the laptop is — almost three years after the agency got a hold of it in December 2019, when Hunter left it at a Delaware repair shop — while refusing to tell Gaetz who else he might ask at the FBI to get some answers.
“How are Americans supposed to trust that you can protect us from the next Colonial pipeline if it seems that you can’t locate a laptop that was given to you three years ago?” Gaetz balked.
Now it’s on record
Gaetz kept raising the point that the laptop could expose the president’s family to being exploited by America’s enemies, but Vorndran bizarrely claimed — despite not knowing where the laptop is — that it absolutely does not put the country at risk.
“Is the first family sufficient cyber infrastructure to protect? You don’t even know if they’re compromised,” Gaetz said.
At the end of their exchange, Gaetz held up a thumb drive containing the contents of Hunter’s laptop and asked for unanimous consent to enter it into the record.
Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) said he would object “pending further investigation,” but Nadler later allowed the information into the record after Gaetz tried again, following “consultation with majority staff.”
