Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) said Friday that she thinks President Donald Trump should not only be removed via the 25th Amendment, but also be arrested for resuming normal public activities after being diagnosed with the coronavirus. (Never mind that the president’s doctors cleared him to do so.)
According to Breitbart, the congresswoman’s remarks came on Friday’s episode of MSNBC’s The ReidOut with host Joy Reid.
“[House] Speaker [Nancy Pelosi] said she thinks there should be a commission to examine whether it’s time for the 25th Amendment based on erratic and bizarre behavior,” Reid told Waters of President Trump. “Now he’s going to go back to spreading the virus personally. Do you think it’s time to invoke the 25th Amendment?”
“Past time,” Waters responded, as Breitbart reported. “That cabinet of his has no guts. They won’t stand up to him. I don’t know how he’s able to intimidate all the people. They see what he’s doing to the country, how he is endangering others. He’s an infected individual who is going to go out and rally and infect more people.”
Waters weighs in
According to Breitbart, Waters also said Friday that she feels Trump is endangering his Secret Service detail with his activities and “making a mockery” of science by driving around in a closed car to thank supporters for lining the streets outside of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center while he was hospitalized. “I think it’s long past time the 25th Amendment should have been enacted,” Waters declared.
Pressed by Reid, however, the California lawmaker admitted that there’s little Congress can do to stop the president from doing “whatever he wants to do.”
“If, in fact, those employees are not being taken care of, if it’s not safe for them unless they make a decision to walk away unless the families demand they come out of there, there is not a lot we will be able to do about it,” she conceded, according to Breitbart. “If it had been left up to me, I would have arrested him a long time ago.”
Nothing new here
Of course, while Waters says Trump is ignoring science, she and Reid are in fact ignoring guidelines from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which state that according to the latest research, an individual is no longer able to spread the coronavirus when 10 days after their initial symptoms have passed, if they don’t have a fever and symptoms are decreasing or gone. Trump’s doctors say this is true of him, according to The New York Times, and they cleared him to return to public activities safely beginning on Saturday.
In addition, the Secret Service has been with Trump all along, as it is their job to do, and would have been with him regardless of whether he had taken a ride outside Walter Reed.
But it’s not all that surprising that Waters would call for Trump’s arrest; this is at least the third time she has publicly done so since he took office in 2017. Later that year, Waters said Trump should be arrested for sexual harassment when he defended former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly from accusations against him, claiming that Trump also sexually harassed women prior to being elected, according to NBC News.
And in 2019, the congresswoman said Trump should be arrested in the lead-up to his impeachment, as The Hill reported.
Unfortunately for Waters and company, Democrats’ attempts to oust Trump from office have historically failed miserably. But that doesn’t mean they’ll ever stop trying.
