Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has proven to be one of the most extreme members of Congress since her tenure began in 2019 when she became known to many Americans for downplaying the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The progressive bomb-thrower is at it again, this time comparing the United States to the Taliban — a questionable statement, to say the least, from someone who sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is now demanding that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) do the improbable and remove Omar from the committee, The Hill reported.
Omar compared U.S. to terrorist groups
In a tweet, Omar accused the U.S. and Israel of “unthinkable atrocities” like those committed by Hamas and the Taliban. “We must have the same level of accountability and justice for all victims of crimes against humanity,” she said.
For making these comparisons, Omar was condemned by Republicans and some Democrats. She then issued a “clarification,” and Pelosi let it slide. “I think that she clarified her remarks, and that was — we accepted that,” Pelosi said.
It was in many ways a dialed-down repeat of the firestorm that erupted in early 2019 when Democrats responded with a token denunciation to comments of Omar’s that many called anti-Semitic. Since then, Omar has never really been penalized, despite making all manner of incendiary remarks.
In an interview with Fox and Friends, McCarthy said that needs to change — immediately. “I think Nancy Pelosi should remove Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee,” he said.
“This is an individual that has not once, but on numerous occasions, been anti-Semitic. Her own entire Congress had to rebuke her in the last one,” he recalled. “But she’s not just anti-Semitic, she’s anti-American now. She’s equating America to Taliban, to Hamas.”
Omar not going anywhere on Pelosi’s watch
If Pelosi won’t do it herself, McCarthy said, he will make sure that Republicans remove Omar if they take back the House in 2022.
“I will promise you this: If we are fortunate enough to have the majority, Omar would not be serving on Foreign Affairs or anybody that has an anti-Semitic, anti-American view,” he said.
This is not the first time McCarthy has called on Pelosi to punish members of her caucus who step out of line, like Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA).
But Pelosi has routinely responded to McCarthy’s threats by shrugging and circling the wagons. Surely McCarthy has figured out by now that Pelosi is not going to do his job for him.
If Republicans want something done about this, they’ll have to take care of it themselves.
