As more information about Rep. Eric Swalwell’s (D-CA) alleged relationship with a Chinese spy is uncovered, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is coming under serious fire for her defense of his position on the House Intelligence Committee.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) indicated that Democrats should seriously consider removing Pelosi from the speakership over her refusal to acknowledge the risks of keeping Swalwell on the committee.
Axios first reported on Tuesday that Swalwell, a notorious detractor of Donald Trump and a champion of all things far-left, was once involved with Christine Fang, a Chinese spy who targeted low-level politicians in the midwest and California’s Bay Area who ” had the potential to make it big on the national stage.”
Axios reported that Fang “took part in fundraising activity for Swalwell’s 2014 re-election campaign, according to a Bay Area political operative and a current U.S. intelligence official.”
Swalwell reportedly kept in contact with Fang and may have even carried on a sexual relationship with her until she abruptly left the country in 2015 after suspicions about her intentions were raised.
Pelosi has stood by Swalwell despite the fact that the information concerning the extent of Swalwell’s relationship with Fang is still being uncovered. Pelosi declared after on Thursday that she doesn’t “have any concerns about Mr. Swalwell,” and attempted to deflect criticism back on McCarthy by claiming that he’s trying to distract from the fact that he has “Qanon in his delegation.”
McCarthy said on Tuesday that Intelligence Committee members “are only selected for the Intel. Committee by the leaders of their party, meaning Nancy Pelosi. Nancy Pelosi is one of the Gang of Eight, along with myself. Did Nancy Pelosi know this had transpired when she put him on the committee?”
Indeed, in her defense of Swalwell on Thursday, Pelosi said that she has been aware of Chinese attempts to influence members of Congress since the Spring of 2015 — and she still chose to place Swalwell on the committee.
McCarthy doubles down
McCarthy has kept up a steady stream of criticism of Pelosi’s unwillingness to remove Swalwell from the intelligence committee, warning that he poses a serious national security risk due to his proximity to classified information.
McCarthy told Fox’s Sean Hannity on Thursday that if Democrats re-elect Pelosi as House Speaker in January, they’re also voting to keep Swalwell on the intelligence committee.
The GOP leader pointed out that Pelosi has “covered” for Swalwell since the initial exposure of his activities, and that “now, when we come into the new Congress on January 3, the Democrats don’t just vote for who’s going to become speaker. If you vote for Nancy Pelosi, you’re now voting to put Adam Schiff back on the Intel. [Committee] and Swalwell, and now you know this information too.”
“So, you better watch how you vote,” Swalwell concluded. Pelosi is already facing the slimmest House majority in history as former Vice President Joe Biden picks off Democrat Representatives for cabinet positions, and her refusal to take criticism of Swalwell could further undermine her control of the House.
