Before the so-called “insurrection” at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, Democrats spent two months hyperventilating about an alleged attempt by former President Donald Trump and his allies to “overturn” the 2020 election. Now, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has been caught doing the exact same thing.
According to Breitbart, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) accused Pelosi on Thursday of holding to a double standard as she “literally” tries to “overturn” a House race that was certified for GOP Iowa Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks.
“Long, long ago”
Miller-Meeks won the race for Iowa’s 2nd District by a hair, getting just six votes more than her Democratic opponent. Still, Iowa performed a recount and certified her as the winner.
Miller-Meeks’ challenger, Rita Hart, has claimed that 22 votes were wrongly tossed, however; meanwhile, Pelosi has insisted that “every vote” be counted in the race, in a perhaps unintentional echo of Trump.
Pelosi provisionally seated Miller-Meeks in January, but she is now leaving the window open to unseat her, reports note.
Although McConnell — notably — did not support Trump’s election challenges, he recalled in a speech on the Senate floor Thursday how “every Democrat, cable news channel, and every liberal news channel was melting down over some Republicans’ efforts to dispute state-certified election results” in November and December.
“I remember distant days long, long ago, way back through the mists of time, when Democrats said it would be wrong for Washington to overturn a state-certified election result. No, wait a minute. That was two months ago,” McConnell said, according to Breitbart.
From “outrage” to “afterthought”
Hart — unlike Trump, who challenged election results in court for weeks — made no such effort to contest the ballots through a legal process. Instead, she has made a controversial plea for the House Administration Committee to investigate the results, as Fox News reports.
Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), who chairs the committee, has also cast doubt on the election results, something very recently held to be verboten by Democrats, saying that the “American people deserve to know who actually won this election,” according to Breitbart.
But if Democrats were consistent, they would admit that Miller-Meeks is the clear winner, McConnell said, lamenting how what was a “massive outrage” before is now a “minor afterthought for much of the national media.”
“The voters of Iowa’s 2nd District spoke in November. They counted the votes. They recounted the votes. The outcome was certified,” the senator said Thursday, according to Breitbart. “That’s the magic word, ‘certified,’ that we heard over and over and over again in November and December,” he said.
“There was the opportunity to present complaints in court. Sound familiar? But the defeated Democrat passed up the opportunity to go to court,” McConnell concluded. He is absolutely right, of course. But does Pelosi care?
