News broke last week that billionaire couple Bill and Melinda Gates are getting divorced. Now, new information has come out that is likely to raise eyebrows.
Whatever other marital troubles the couple had that led to the divorce, Melinda Gates was reportedly unhappy about ties between her husband and convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, Fox Business reported.
An exclusive report from The Wall Street Journal cited unnamed sources described as being close with the wealthy couple. Those individuals include “people familiar with” the Gates’ divorce along with a former employee of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Melinda Gates disliked Epstein
According to those sources, Melinda Gates disliked Epstein after meeting him in 2013 and expressed concern over her husband’s continued association with the disgraced financier.
In 2019, Bill Gates told The Journal that although he and Epstein were acquainted, there wasn’t “any business relationship or friendship with him.”
However, Gates spokeswoman Bridgitt Arnold acknowledged later that same year that the two had met on multiple occasions to discuss philanthropic ventures, and said her boss “regrets ever meeting with Epstein and recognizes it was an error in judgment to do so,” according to Fox Business.
The Journal reported that the Gates’ divorce has been the works since 2019, “according to documents reviewed by the outlet.”
Bill Clinton and Epstein
Bill Gates is not the only high-profile figure with ties to Epstein: former President Bill Clinton also had a well publicized association with him.
In 2016, Fox News revealed that Federal Aviation Administration flight records showed that Clinton took 26 trips aboard Epstein’s private plane, which was nicknamed the “Lolita Express.”
The former president also took the unusual step of leaving his Secret Service security detail behind for at least five of those 26 flights.
Conchita Sarnoff, the author of a book about Epstein called TrafficKing, noted, “Why would a former president associate with a man like that?” She added that “everyone in New York, certainly within his inner circles” was aware of Epstein’s status as a sexual predator.
In August 2019, Epstein was discovered dead in a federal holding facility where he was awaiting trial on human trafficking charges. His mysterious death was labeled a suicide.
