Miami Mayor Francis Suarez in self-quarantine after testing positive for coronavirus

A top Democrat has revealed that he is among those infected with the new coronavirus.

According to the Washington Examiner, Francis Suarez (D), the mayor of Miami, Florida, is currently in a self-quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19.

Symptom onset

Suarez announced on during an appearance on CNN Friday that he had indeed contracted the coronavirus.

“Today, I tested positive, so I don’t know how long I’ve had it and for what period it has been incubating,” he said, speaking from his home, according to the Examiner.

The Miami mayor spoke about how he was currently feeling, describing his symptoms as similar to a cold, which is in line with personal accounts provided by other infected individuals.

“Look, I’m starting to feel a little bit of symptoms,” he said. “You know, it feels similar to the onset of a cold at this particular juncture.”

Attempting to allay fears

Suarez also told the network that he plans on giving daily updates about his condition as a way to combat the general fear people have with regard to the spread of COVID-19.

“I want to make sure that people understand that I have it,” Suarez said. “I’m obviously 42 years old. I don’t have any immunodeficiencies. I’m not elderly, obviously. So, my hope is that, by me sharing my experience, it can hopefully calm some people down.”

Here, Suarez was referring to the fact that COVID-19 has been far more devastating to people who have underlying health concerns or who are elderly.

Worrisome links

Suarez appears to have contracted COVID-19 after he attended a meeting on Saturday with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, about whom there have been conflicting health status reports. A member of Bolsonaro’s administration — press secretary Fabio Wajngarten — has tested positive for COVID-19, but it is unclear whether contact with these individuals was the mode of transmission in the case of Suarez.

President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) attended the same meeting and also had contact with the Brazilian delegation.

Trump has revealed that he was tested for the coronavirus and that the result of that test was negative for the illness, according to ABC News.
