Critics across the political spectrum are piling on President Donald Trump this week in an effort to blame him for the civil unrest in the nation’s capital on Wednesday.
According to The Washington Times, former First Lady Michelle Obama has called for the president to be permanently banned from all social media platforms as a result of his supposed incitement of a violent riot at the U.S. Capitol building.
“An overwhelmingly peaceful movement”
It is among the various calls for Trump to face serious consequences for his rhetoric regarding his perception that a second term was stolen from him due to rampant fraud in the 2020 presidential election. In her statement on the matter, Obama attempted to compare Wednesday’s event to the Black Lives Matter movement.
“The Summer’s Black Lives Matter protests were an overwhelmingly peaceful movement — our nation’s largest demonstrations ever, bringing together people of every race and class and encouraging millions to re-examine their own assumptions and behavior,” she claimed.
Nevertheless, Obama asserted that Wednesday’s events represented a clear and present threat to the American way of life.
“Yesterday made it painfully clear that certain Americans are, in fact, allowed to denigrate the flag and symbols of our nation,” she said.
The former first lady went on to assert that authorities in D.C. went easy on rioters this week in comparison to the civil unrest of last year, though she did not include the fact that one protester was fatally shot on Wednesday.
In any case, Obama believes the best course of action would be for Big Tech companies to exercise their power to strip the outgoing president of his social media bully pulpits.
“Now is the time for Silicon Valley companies to stop enabling this monstrous behavior — and go even further than they have already by permanently banning [Trump] from their platforms and putting in place policies to prevent their technology from being used by the nation’s leaders to fuel insurrection,” she said.
Fox News Channel host Laura Ingraham reacted to Obama’s call with a tweet referring to her as one of the “real wanna-be tyrants” who “only wish to silence their opposition or demonize them into submission.”
For his part, however, Trump made his intentions clear during and after the events on Capitol Hill, declaring on Wednesday: “I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful. No violence! Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order — respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!”
