President Joe Biden spent last year campaigning on a pledge to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and bring America back to a sense of normalcy. Despite those promises, newly leaked documents suggest that at least one of his policies has made the situation even worse.
NBC News reported recently that material prepared for a briefing this week with the president revealed that a significant number of COVID-infected individuals are being released from migrant detention facilities into the streets of America.
Those testing positive for the virus include over 18% of illegal immigrant families, along with over 20% of unaccompanied minors. Given the numbers of both of those groups crossing the border each month, it adds up.
Infection appears to be common among people leaving the country as well, with as many as 25% of deportees on some flights testing positive for COVID-19. That has lead to deportees being placed in quarantine prior to their departure.
The document, which was created by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), explained that the situation is getting worse, saying, “In the last 2-3 weeks, the percent positivity rates among all demographics has increased.”
Meanwhile, NBC News quoted a statement from the White House that declared, “DHS and CBP (Customs and Border Protection) takes its responsibility to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and other diseases very seriously.”
“CBP provides migrants who can’t be expelled…or are awaiting processing with PPE from the moment they are taken into custody, and migrants are required to keep masks on at all times, including when they are transferred or in the process of being released,” it continued.
“If anyone exhibits signs of illness in CBP custody, they are referred to local health systems for appropriate testing, diagnosis, isolation and treatment.”
Mandatory testing coming?
NBC News cited another document as saying that the Biden administration has considered adopting a mandatory COVID-19 testing policy on all incoming migrants.
However, the resources to implement such a policy do not currently exist. Deputy Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz said his agency is “already overwhelmed.”
On Tuesday, Fox News reported that Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich (R) criticized the Biden administration for its practice of releasing COVID-positive individuals into the country.
“As the Biden administration is ramping up pressure campaigns for COVID-related mandates, this revelation shows incredible hypocrisy and disdain for the health of everyday Americans,” Brnovich wrote in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
