The news that the Supreme Court could be planning to overturn Roe V. Wade has created something of a moment for feminist icon and failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
One of Clinton’s allies, MSNBC anchor Mika Brzezinski, even questioned whether the development might push Clinton to run for president again, the Washington Examiner reported.
An unprecedented and unauthorized leak of a draft opinion authored by Justice Alito called Roe V. Wade “egregiously wrong from the start.”
In a segment discussing the court’s prospective decision, Brzezinski said she had a “random thought” that the end of Roe just might push Clinton to enter politics again.
“I was thinking about Hillary Clinton and how this just might put her over the edge and make her jump back in,” Brzezinski said. “But it’s just — this is the kind of news that rocks your world as a woman.”
Clinton has denied rumors of continued presidential aspirations, despite her clear and enduring bitterness over her humiliating 2016 loss to Donald Trump.
In a typically dramatic tweet, Clinton seized on the Supreme Court news to inject herself once more into the political spotlight — decrying the potential end of Roe as a “disgrace.”
Clinton speculated that allowing Americans to weigh in on abortion through the political process, instead of allowing a single Supreme Court decision from fifty years ago to dictate policy on the crucial moral controversy, would “kill and subjugate women.”
“Not surprising. But still outrageous,” Clinton tweeted. “This decision is a direct assault on the dignity, rights, & lives of women, not to mention decades of settled law. It will kill and subjugate women even as a vast majority of Americans think abortion should be legal. What an utter disgrace.”
Supporters of Clinton are having a “she told you so” moment, with many saying Roe would be safe had Clinton won the 2016 election. Clinton warned that a Supreme Court molded by Trump would overturn the precedent — an outcome Trump himself had promised to the evangelical right.
Of course, Clinton would probably take any excuse to come out of semi-retirement and return to politics. But will the Roe drama really be enough to make her viable again? As it stands, it’s not clear what effect Roe v. Wade ending would have on the midterm elections, which Democrats are expected to lose, badly.
Brzezinski is a known Clinton shill. This looks to be an attempt by one of Clinton’s cheerleaders to hype up a scenario for which there seems to be very little demand, even among Democrats.
