According to the local outlet KTLA, authorities suspect that a murder-suicide is to blame for a gruesome discovery made at a home in Moreno Valley, California.
The scene of the crime is the 25000 block of Billie Drive.
On Friday morning, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department decided to perform a welfare check on the residence.
This came after the police received reports from individuals who said that they had not heard from the residents of the house in several weeks.
A gruesome scene, and a gunshot
Police began the welfare check by knocking on the front door. After not receiving a response, they decided to force entry.
Inside the residence, they found the dead body of a woman. The sheriff’s department indicated that the woman’s body had clear signs of “significant trauma,” but more details have not been provided.
While the police were evaluating what had happened with the woman, they heard a gunshot go off in a different room of the house. At this point, unsure of the situation, the police decided to exit the residence.
Police regrouped outside of the house. A perimeter was set up and the neighbors were evacuated. In the meantime, a SWAT team and a bomb squad arrived at the scene.
The police attempted to make contact with whomever it was who fired off the gun, but it was to no avail. After several hours went by, a bomb-defusing robot was sent into the house. Inside the home, the dead body of a man was discovered with a single gunshot wound.
An investigation of the incident is ongoing. The sheriff’s department says that, so far, it appears as though the situation is a murder-suicide, with the man killing the woman and then taking his own life.
Police have yet to release the identities of the individuals, and so, it is not clear what relationship, if any, they had. Neighbors told reporters that the home was occupied by an elderly couple that was rarely seen. But, the sheriff’s department has yet to confirm this.
It is not clear what the man’s motivation was, if, indeed, a murder-suicide is what took place.
