Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski gears up to defend Senate seat

One of the biggest RINOs of them all, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), is gearing up to defend her seat from a challenger endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

The Alaska Republican announced Friday that she will run for re-election in 2022, Breitbart reported. “My heart is, and always has been, in Alaska, and that’s why I am proud to announce my campaign for re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2022,” Murkowski’s campaign announcement read.

Like GOP Reps. Liz Cheney (WY), Adam Kinzinger (IL), and others, Murkowski’s reliably liberal politics have made her a favorite of the mainstream media and a foe to the conservative base and Trump.

Murkowski obtained her position through her father, former Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski, who appointed her senator in 2002. She has retained her position ever since.

She was one of seven Republican senators to formally endorse the left’s “insurrection” blood libel by voting to convict Trump in his second bogus impeachment.

“If months of lies, organizing a rally of supporters in an effort to thwart the work of Congress, encouraging a crowd to march on the Capitol, and then taking no meaningful action to stop the violence once it began is not worthy of impeachment, conviction, and disqualification from holding office in the United States, I cannot imagine what is,” she said of her vote at the time, according to the New York Post.

As The Hill notes, Murkowski’s campaign promises to open up another rift between Trump, who has campaigned to purge the GOP of “RINOs,” and the Republican Party establishment led by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), which is supporting her.

Trump vs. the RINOs

Murkowski also has the backing of Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), who runs the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC).

On the other hand, Murkowski was censured by the Alaska state GOP after her impeachment vote earlier this year, and Trump remains popular with Republican voters.

Trump has endorsed Kelly Tshibaka, the former commissioner of the Alaska Department of Administration, in the primary.

“Murkowski has got to go! Kelly Tshibaka is the candidate who can beat Murkowski — and she will,” he wrote in June, as the New York Post reported.

“Kelly is a fighter who stands for Alaska values and America First,” Trump continued. “I look forward to campaigning in Alaska for Kelly Tshibaka. She has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”
