President Joe Biden recently said he’d like to pass more gun control restrictions during the congressional “lame-duck” session, but one of his top allies in that regard, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), just acknowledged that Democrats lack the necessary votes to do so, the Daily Wire reported.
Biden on Thursday had called for a renewed ban on so-called “assault weapons” and stricter enforcement of “red flag laws,” and even suggested a ban on all semi-automatic weapons — the overwhelming majority of all modern firearms — was necessary.
Biden calls for renewed “assault weapons” ban, to outlaw all semi-automatic weapons
On Thanksgiving Day, after meeting with local firefighters while vacationing in Nantucket, Massachusetts, President Biden was asked by reporters about the recent mass shooting at a Walmart in Virginia and said, “I’m sick and tired of these shootings. We should have much stricter gun laws.”
He lamented that controversial state-level red flag laws — which allow for the pre-emptive confiscation of firearms from individuals deemed to be a potential threat — weren’t being sufficiently enforced.
Then he argued that virtually all modern firearms should be banned, as he said, “The idea — the idea we still allow semiautomatic weapons to be purchased is sick. It’s just sick. It has no — no social redeeming value. Zero. None. Not a single, solitary rationale for it except profit for the gun manufacturers.”
Asked if he would work toward further restricting guns during the lame-duck session — the brief period between the election and the start of the new congressional term in January — Biden replied, “I’m going to try to get rid of assault weapons,” and added, “I’m going to do it whenever I — I got to make that assessment as I get in and start counting the votes.”
Not enough votes
Unfortunately for President Biden and other anti-gun Democrats, Sen. Murphy of Connecticut, one of the more prominent and outspoken gun-grabbers in the Senate, admitted during an appearance Sunday on CNN‘s “State of the Union” that his party lacked the votes necessary to make Biden’s unconstitutional gun control dreams a reality.
“I’m glad that President Biden is gonna be pushing us to take a vote on an assault weapons ban,” Murphy told host Dana Bash. “The House has already passed it. It’s sitting in front of the Senate.”
“Does it have 60 votes in the Senate right now? Probably not,” he acknowledged. “But let’s see if we can try to get that number as close to 60 as possible. If we don’t have the votes, then we’ll talk to [Senate Democratic Leader Chuck] Schumer and maybe come back next year, with maybe an additional senator, and see if we can do better.”
Dem senator calls for defunding police
Separately, Sen. Murphy in that same CNN interview displayed his complete hypocrisy and utter lack of self-awareness by calling for the defunding of law enforcement in so-called “Second Amendment sanctuary” jurisdictions — where local officials refuse to enforce federal gun control laws — and ironically used the exact same rhetoric that Republicans have used for years against predominately Democratic “sanctuary cities” where local officials refuse to cooperate with or enforce federal immigration laws.
“They have decided that they are going to essentially refuse to implement laws that are on the books. That is a growing problem in this country,” Murphy said of the Second Amendment sanctuaries. “And I think we’re gonna have to have a conversation about that in the United States Senate. Do we want to continue to supply funding to law enforcement in counties that refuse to implement state and federal gun laws?”
“I’ll talk to my colleagues about what our approach should be to this problem. But 60 percent of counties in this country are refusing to implement the nation’s gun laws, we’ve got to do something about that,” he added.
