With the new coronavirus pandemic spreading quickly across the country, it was only a matter of time before employees of major news organizations — which remain busy at work amid shutdowns almost everywhere else — began to contract the virus and, in some unfortunate cases, die from the severe illness.
It was revealed on Friday that a “longtime” staffer at NBC News died shortly after testing positive for COVID-19, The Daily Caller reported.
The sad news was announced in an internal memo to staff at NBC from network chairman Andy Lack.
Larry Edgeworth, the staffer who died, reportedly “suffered from other health issues that led him to succumb to the illness” after initially testing positive for the virus.
Beloved audio technician dies
NBC News reported that Edgeworth, 61, worked in the equipment room at the network’s headquarters in New York City. He served as an audio technician for 25 years and was well known for accompanying network correspondents on their travels around the globe to report the news.
“As we have heard from medical professionals, those with underlying health concerns are sadly the most vulnerable,” Lack wrote in the memo to network employees. “Many of you were fortunate enough to work with Larry over the years, so you know that he was the guy you wanted by your side no matter where you were.”
Edgeworth leaves behind a wife and two sons, and Lack wrote, “We are doing everything we can to support his family during this very difficult time.”
The article from NBC also contained a number of heartfelt tributes for the beloved sound man from co-workers, correspondents, anchors, and executives.
Other networks also affected
NBC noted that at least two other staffers at the network have also tested positive for COVID-19, which led the network to instruct most staffers at the main office and bureaus worldwide to work from home if possible to help reduce the spread of the disease.
Other network employees who came into contact with those sick individuals have reportedly been instructed to place themselves in isolation for the time being.
The Daily Caller noted that NBC was not alone in dealing with staffers who have tested positive for the new coronavirus, as several other news organizations — including CBS News, CNN, and the New York Times, among others — have reported that employees of those outlets have also fallen ill from the virus.
This is truly terrible news, and we offer our condolences to the NBC News family as they mourn the loss of a respected team member to this horrible viral contagion.
