Fox News reports that social media users are pummeling NBC News over a recent tweet in which it compared illegal immigrants to “trash.”
This situation stems from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R) decision, last week, to voluntarily fly some 50 illegal immigrants from Florida to Martha’s Vineyard.
DeSantis, here, is following in the footsteps of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) and others who have been transporting illegal immigrants from their states to Democrat-run non-border states.
The purpose is manifold, but mainly to provide some relief for border states by sending illegal immigrants to so-called sanctuary cities and to give open-border advocates a taste of the southern border crisis.
To say the least, DeSantis’s move has outraged the political left. NBC News joined in this outrage, but, in the eyes of many, the outlet went too far.
It did so by publishing a tweet that quoted Max Lefeld, the founder of the Casa Venezuela Dallas foundation, a charity group dedicated to helping refugees.
Lefeld, attempting to condemn DeSantis’s move as immoral, said, “it’s like me taking my trash out and just driving to different areas where I live and just throwing my trash there.”
Here is what NBC actually wrote:
Florida Gov. DeSantis sending asylum-seekers to Martha’s Vineyard is like ‘me taking my trash out and just driving to different areas where I live and just throwing my trash there,’ a founding member of a foundation which helps refugees says. – @NBCLatino.
Social media responds
The obvious problem– which NBC failed to realize — is that in this simile, the migrants are unambiguously being compared to “trash.” Social media users were quick to realize this, and a backlash ensued.
“Holy s***.” wrote conservative journalist Jason Howerton. “Wow. Sometimes you really just want to shut up and let them talk.”
NBC News responded by quickly deleting its tweet, which led to sarcastic questions from social media users, such as this one from Sebastian Gorka: “Why did you delete this @NBCNews? Have you changed your mind that Illegals are ‘trash?'”
It ought to be noted that NBC has still published a story in which it uses the above quote from Lefeld, directly comparing migrants to “trash.” So, apparently, they are still okay with the comparison.
