‘New generation of leadership’: Democrats begin defection from Biden

Two Democrat House members have become the first lawmakers on the Democrat side to call for President Joe Biden to step aside rather than run for re-election in 2024.

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) and Rep. Angie Craig’s (D-MN) said they were in solidarity in their calls for Biden to step aside rather than run for re-election at age 82.

“I think the country would be well served by a new generation of compelling, well-prepared, dynamic Democrats who step up,” Phillips told a local radio show last week.

“I think Dean Phillips and I are in lockstep and alignment with that, and I’m going to do everything in my power as a member of Congress to make sure that we have a new generation of leadership,” Craig said to MinnPost on Tuesday.

Agreeing with voters

The two Democrats are in agreement with the majority of American voters, of which 64% do not think Biden should run again.

Biden is mired in a number of different problems and controversies, including 40-year inflation highs, higher gas prices, and reports that his son Hunter Biden was involved in corruption and overseas business dealings that may have been illegal.

Voters are also unhappy with Biden’s refusal to take stronger action to stop illegal immigration and his handling of the war in Ukraine.

Craig and Phillips have not mentioned any specific actions by Biden that are problemmatic for them, outside his age.

A difficult gap

Their public statements may open the way for other Democrats to call for Biden to step aside in 2024.

New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D) said during a primary debate on Tuesday that she didn’t believe he was running, but then walked those comments back on Twitter Wednesday morning, saying that she would support Biden if he ran again.

It’s a difficult gap to bridge for many Democrats right now, as they see Biden making gaffe after gaffe and mistake after mistake, but don’t want to get on the wrong side of party majorities by pointing out Biden’s failures.

Only time will tell whether more Democrats decide to ditch Biden and go with a different candidate in 2024.
