Mayra Flores made headlines last week when she won a special election in Texas’ 34th Congressional District, becoming the first Republican to win there in modern history.
Flores ran in part on a pledge to improve border security, and she has wasted no time in going after Vice President Kamala Harris for failing on that issue.
Flores says Harris is “useless” when it comes to the border
“She’s honestly useless,” the Daily Caller quoted the new Republican lawmaker as saying of Harris, adding, “I don’t know why she’s in that position.”
“She hasn’t been here in south Texas to see what their policies are creating, the mess that they’re creating in our country, and that their policies are hurting real people.”
The Daily Caller noted that last year, President Joe Biden made Harris his “border czar” and tasked her with addressing the wave of illegal immigration which has swamped America’s southern border.
However, Harris’ efforts have been far from successful, with figures released by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) showing that there have already been 1,444,886 encounters between Border Patrol personnel and illegal migrants in fiscal year 2022 compared with 1,662,167 encounters for the entirety of fiscal year 2021.
Flores’ district is located in South Texas, where communities have born the brunt of increased illegal migration in recent years.
Campaign video blasted vaccine mandate for Border Patrol agents
Her husband is a Border Patrol agent, a fact that Flores referenced in a campaign video she released last fall which criticized the Biden administration’s policy on COVID vaccines.
My husband is a border patrol agent and he’s being given til 11/22 to get vaccinated or face termination!
If this administration really cared about the well being of this country they would secure our borders instead of the vilification of our agents! pic.twitter.com/VB5w1tTqiK

“My husband is a Border Patrol agent, and our Border Patrol agents have been told that if they do not get vaccinated by November they will lose their jobs,” Flores said.
“In the middle of a border crisis,” she added. “The Biden administration is a disgrace. Filemon Vela, Vicente González, you are part of the problem in South Texas. You created this border crisis and you are a disgrace to stand by this administration.”
