New York Gov. Kathy Hochul faces pushback after posing maskless alongside Broadway performers

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) presides over some of the country’s toughest coronavirus restrictions But a newly surfaced photo suggests that she’s much better at enforcing COVID rules than she is at following them.

According to Fox News, Hochul tweeted out an image earlier this week that showed her and a group of Broadway stage performers standing closely together — without wearing masks.

“Have you heard?” Hochul asked in the tweet last Sunday. “#BroadwayisBack! Bill and I had the absolute joy of seeing @SixBroadway Friday night — what’s on your Broadway bucket list?”

Double standard

The tweet brought immediate pushback, with Ricochet editor Bethany Mandel opining, “You make two year olds mask all day long. You should too.” Meanwhile, podcaster and conservative science fiction author Jacob Airey demanded, “Where’s the social distancing or masking, Kathy?”

Also quick to speak up was former Republican congressional candidate Phil Oliva, who shared an image of Hochul embracing New York Attorney General Letitia James while maskless.

“Hochul was wearing a mask outdoors at a groundbreaking in Genesee County, but indoors tonight she’s forgone the mask and is hugging and kissing people,” Oliva noted. “Reminder: Hochul requires 2-year olds to mask while at daycare.”

Not the first one

Hochul’s gaffe recalls previous incidents in which high-profile Democratic leaders have been caught flouting the very restrictions that they champion for others as a means of preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Last year, Fox News aired security footage showing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) going maskless in a San Francisco hair salon that was supposed to be shut down amid the pandemic.

Not far from the spot that sparked controversy for the speaker, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) drew ire — and a recall effort — after photos emerged of him without a mask at a dinner party at a swanky restaurant despite his own orders barring such activities.

More recently, Fox News reported that Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) violated both state and city rules when she was spotted unmasked at a WNBA game earlier this month.

Lightfoot is currently in a battle with Chicago police and other first responders regarding enforcement of her COVID-19 vaccine mandate. Fox 32 Chicago has reported that suburban communities and neighboring counties have expressed a reluctance to send officers to the city if the mandate results in a shortage of police.
