New York state’s Department of Health (DOH) announced that they would be prioritizing people of color over white residents for their limited supply of anti-viral pills meat to treat COVID-19.
According to a report in Breitbart News, the state Health Department announced on Dec. 27 that their limited supply of orally administrated anti-virals will be given to healthcare professionals conditionally:
The DOH announcement stated that they will “require providers to prioritize treatment for patients at highest risk for severe COVID-19 until more product becomes available.”
Their eligibility list included a ranking system that stated requirement should be “have a medical condition or other factors that increase their risk for severe illness.”
One of the stated risk factors is outlined as being a “non-white race or Hispanic/Latino ethnicity should be considered a risk factor, as longstanding systemic health and social inequities have contributed to an increased risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19.”
Columnist Karol Markowicz was one of the first to draw attention to this issue in the guidelines in her tweet when she pointed out that the state has notified the public it is at a delicate for possible treatments:
“NY State Department of Health warns they don’t have enough Paxlovid or Monoclonal Antibody Treatment and white people need not apply,” Markowicz said.
A second journalist and author, Abigale Shrier, also noted what many believe are discriminatory policies, saying that the guidance should be challenged on a constitutional claim:
“If the state can discriminate racially for medical treatment, then the 14th Amendment truly has no meaning. There needs to be a constitutional challenge to this IMMEDIATELY,” she tweeted.
Former Trump administration adviser Stephen Miller also called out the policy in his tweet saying that the Biden Administration has set the tone for this kind of discrimination:
“On his 1st day in office, Biden signed EO making ‘racial equity’ (invidious racial discrimination) the organizing principle of his Admin. The left took heed. Now, NY is rationing lifesaving meds based on race. This is our totalitarian future if we don’t defeat the equity crusade.”
While state and federal administration officials have been unwilling to publicly admit that any preventative measures toward health and wellness could help fending off the virus, early in the pandemic the vitamin D deficiencies that are often present in those with darker skin tones was pointed to by some medical professionals as one of the major risk factors for severe cases of COVID-19.
