New York has been hit hard by COVID-19, and the state’s Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo hasn’t been shy about asking federal officials to do their part to help. But though he spent much of this week chastising President Donald Trump for not doing enough, it looks like Cuomo is now changing his tune.
In a switch from his usual stance, Cuomo praised the Trump administration on Wednesday for its help with getting much-needed medical supplies, including ventilators, to the Empire State. According to the Daily Caller, the Democrat said he appreciates Trump’s “cooperation” and thinks the administration is using the Defense Production Act (DPA) “well” in this case.
The governor’s message comes in stark contrast with remarks he made earlier in the week arguing that it is “inexplicable” for Trump not to use the DPA in this time of crisis.
“It’s nice that these companies are coming forward and saying they want to help — that is not going to get us there. I do not for the life of me understand the reluctance to use the federal Defense Production Act,” Cuomo said Tuesday, according to the Daily Caller.
Teaming up with Trump
At a press conference Wednesday, Cuomo explained that he has spoken directly with officials at the White House on the best way to handle the coronavirus crisis — and after some tension earlier in the week, Cuomo admitted they’ve been “extraordinarily helpful.”
“I’ve spoken to people in the White House who have handled these operations, I’ve spoken with the vice president,” Cuomo said, according to the Daily Caller. “I’ve spoken with Jared Kushner, who is a New Yorker, he knows New York and he is working in the White House, and he has been extraordinarily helpful on all of these situations.”
The governor went on to say that he thinks “the president and his team…are using the DPA well, because it’s basically a leverage tool when you are dealing with private companies, right?”
He added that he’d be working with the White House to “get these things up and running,” the Daily Caller reported. “It’s something that our team is working on with the White House team and I want to thank the president for his cooperation and his team for their cooperation,” Cuomo opined. “We’re getting very creative. We’re talking to countries around the world as well as new companies that could do production.”
“I want to say thank you”
Though Cuomo hasn’t always seen eye-to-eye with Trump, this isn’t the first time the New York governor had kind words for the president amid the pandemic.
“New Yorkers will do everything they can to be good partners with the federal government,” Cuomo told reporters earlier this month, according to CNBC. “I think the president was 100% sincere in saying he wanted to work together… I want to say thank you,” the Democrat added. “They will have nothing but cooperation and partnership from the state of New York.”
Of course, those words could get Cuomo in trouble with members of his party’s left-wing, many of whom are willing to go after fellow Democrats that they consider to be too moderate. West Virginia’s Sen. Joe Manchin knows that firsthand, finding himself the target of leftist fury when he voted to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018, as The Hill noted.
Only time will tell if Cuomo will soon meet the same fate.
