New Yorkers were shocked this week after a couple were accused of keeping their two young children in what authorities have called a "house of horrors."

According to the New York Post, 40-year-old Stephanie Grabowski and 45-year-old Mark Russell were hit with multiple charges on Monday, including kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment and child endangerment.

Bruised children kept in filth without food or clothing

That came after police and city workers came across their daughters while clearing squatters out of a Bronx public housing complex.

The three-year-old and four-year-old children were both found to be naked and bruised while also covered in fecal matter.

A rope is said to have been used to tie shut the door of the girls' bedroom which reeked of urine. What's more, the children lacked food and clothing, with Fox News reporting that one of the children was seen attempting to eat her mattress.

District attorney: "The situation is beyond the pale"

Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark released a statement which said, "The defendants allegedly kept these little girls in a house of horrors."

"They illegally occupied the apartment and left the children alone without food or clothing. Fortunately, police rescued the girls and a nurse discovered signs of abuse for which they are being treated. The situation is beyond the pale," she continued.

Clark explained that during an investigation at Jacobi Medical Center, the two girls were noted to have "difficulties walking, standing and speaking."

What's more, the pair were "observed to have significant bruising and marks in various stages of healing" along with "rashes throughout their bodies."

Bronx Supreme Court Justice Ralph Fabrizio set bail conditions of $150,000 cash or a $400,000 bond for Grabowski and $100,000 cash or a $200,000 bond for Russell. Both individuals continue to be held behind bars at Rikers Island.

News of the girls' treatment led to expressions of outrage online, with some Twitter users calling on authorities to release the suspects' mugshots.
