New York City Mayor Eric Adams is asking for help from the federal government to handle an influx of illegal immigrants being bussed into the city from border towns in Texas, an ironic turn of events since liberals like him have had no sympathy for the problems open border policies have been causing in border states.
“Currently, New York City is experiencing a marked increase in the number of asylum seekers who are arriving from Latin America and other regions. In some instances, families are arriving on buses sent by the Texas and Arizona governments, while in other cases, it appears that individuals are being sent by the federal government,” Adams said in a statement, estimating the number of illegals newly in the city at over 2,800.
The city has a “right to shelter” mandate, which means that anyone who shows up in the city homeless must be placed in a bed somewhere.
“In New York City, we have a legal and moral mandate to provide shelter to everyone who needs it, and will continue to fulfill that mandate, but, as we have said, we urgently need federal support to help us do so,” Adams said.
Homeless numbers up
The number of people in homeless shelters in the city is up 12% over March and 12% over the same time last year, NBC’s Texas affiliate reported.
The reasons may be multifaceted, the media outlet admitted, including a rise in evictions and staffing issues.
Adams called border states “heartless” for sending their migrants his way and said they should ask for federal help if they need it rather than sending the migrants away.
Despite Adams’ reports, however, Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey (R) say they have not bussed illegal immigrants to New York City, only to Washington, D.C. where Mayor Muriel Bowser is similarly begging for federal help.
Border policies to blame
The Republican candidate for New York governor, Rep. Lee Zeldin, put the blame for the problems squarely on the President Joe Biden administration’s open border policies, however.
“Their weak border policy is then made worse by what amounts to a travel agency flying the illegal immigrants to destinations all across the country, including New York,” he said. “The obvious consequence is that New Yorkers are now stuck dealing with the consequences. The solution is that the surge of illegal entry across our southern border needs to be shut down, the Remain in Mexico policy must be enforced.”
There were more than 200,000 “border encounters” in June, and over a million illegal immigrants have been released into the U.S. by Border Patrol and ICE under Biden’s leadership.
These illegal immigrants have to go somewhere, but these mayors’ NIMBY policies make it clear that while they want to say they stand for open borders, Democrats have no idea about the consequences of their actions or the impact on the country.
