Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), chair of the House Intelligence Committee, has long been among the most vocal in alleging wrongdoing by former President Donald Trump, particularly with regard to Russia — but he’s never turned up much in the way of actual evidence to support his claims.
Now, one Republican congressman is calling Schiff out for his “obsession” with the former president. The Washington Examiner reports that Kentucky Rep. James Comer (R) derided his Dem colleague in a scathing back-and-forth on the House floor Thursday for all the unproven accusations he’s “tried to peddle” since Trump won the White House.
“I think everyone is aware”
According to the Examiner, the verbal showdown between Comer and Schiff, which was caught on camera, came after the Democrat congressman voiced his support for a Dem-backed bill known as the Protecting Our Democracy Act. The measure focuses on former President Trump and is reportedly designed to limit the power of the presidential office.
In reference to Schiff’s oft-repeated but never truly fulfilled vow to produce actual evidence of “collusion” between Trump’s team and Russia, Comer said: “Every time Chairman Schiff rises to speak on a bill about intelligence and security and holding the president accountable, I get excited hoping we’re going to hear about that evidence of collusion and all the other investigations that were conducted in the House.”
Schiff sought to defend himself by reminding Comer of allegations lodged against 2016 Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who was accused of providing Moscow with “internal campaign polling data.”
“Are you aware that the president’s campaign chairman Paul Manafort [secretly] met with an agent of Russian intelligence and provided Russian intelligence with internal campaign polling data, as well as strategic insights about their intelligence in key battleground states?” he said, according to the Examiner. “Are you aware of that?”
Comer retorted: “I think everyone is aware of every bit of information that you all have tried to peddle over the last four years.”
Get over it
Later, Comer shifted the conversation toward more recent allegations of corrupt foreign business dealings involving Hunter Biden. But Schiff quickly changed the subject, instead opting to rehash old and empty accusations about a 2016 meeting between Donald Trump, Jr. and Russian operatives at Trump Tower in New York. “Are you aware about those facts?”
“I think that everyone’s seen all the information, again, that you all have peddled,” Comer replied, as the Examiner reported. “I’m curious if you would like to make a wager on which president’s child, which president’s son, at the end of the day, once we have the gavel, will have the most — will be the most security risk to our nation.”
Schiff tried his best to continue outlining the many baseless allegations of wrongdoing against Trump that he’s thought up, but Comer eventually ended the conversation by reclaiming his time. “[Democrats] have spent a lot of time, a lot of effort, a lot of tax dollars, on trying to peddle a lot of wrongdoing in the previous administration,” Comer said, according to the Examiner.
“It’s time for the majority party to focus on governing and get over their obsession with Donald Trump,” he concluded. caught on camera at the exchange for yourself, courtesy of The Hill:
