Here is a scary thought that ought to encourage all Americans to get out and vote.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is being hailed as a “national voice” and the future of the Democratic Party by progressives who would love to see her run for president one day.
“A real coup”
For those who haven’t been following Ocasio-Cortez’s activities lately, she has joined the campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and, over the past month, has been giving speeches on his behalf. As a result, she has earned the praise of Sanders campaign adviser Jeff Weaver, who recently spoke with Politico.
“Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a leader in the progressive movement,” he said. “She is broadly popular, frankly, among Democratic voters. She is particularly strong with young voters, voters of color. She’s an important national voice, and adding her weight to the political revolution is a real coup for us.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s support for Sanders doesn’t just help him strengthen his appeal with young voters. According to Politico, “some political operatives see their joint appearances as also laying the groundwork for a possible Ocasio-Cortez bid one day, purposefully or not.”
For his part, Sanders has stated that Ocasio-Cortez would play a “very, very important role” in his White House. Some have interpreted this as meaning that Ocasio-Cortez might be his vice presidential pick.
The snag, of course, is that one must be a minimum of 35-years-old to be vice president, and Ocasio-Cortez is only 30. “Well, I can’t be his running mate, because I’m not old enough. I’m 30, and you have to be at least 35. It’d be an honor to be vice president,” Ocasio-Cortez is on the record as saying.
As a member of Sanders’ campaign, Ocasio-Cortez has spent much of her time going after the donor bases of Sander’s competitors — in particular, fellow millennial Pete Buttigieg.
“For anyone who accuses us for instituting purity tests, it’s called having values,” Ocasio-Cortez recently stated. “It’s called giving a damn. It’s called having standards for your conduct to not be funded by billionaires.”
Since then, OpenSecrets.com revealed that Ocasio-Cortez accepted a $2,700 donation from billionaire Tom Steyer. It’s just another instance of a far-left Democrat not practicing what they preach.
Putting that off to the side, though, progressives like Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, the president of the California Young Democrats, believes that his party has a bright future in Ocasio-Cortez. “The future of the Democratic Party is not Pete Buttigieg. It’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She has gripped the attention of fellow millennials across the country.”
Let’s hope that American voters disagree.
