Illinois police officer dies weeks after drunk driving crash that killed 3 other lawmen: Report

A fourth lawman has died as a result of a drunk driving accident involving an illegal immigrant.

According to Breitbart, the Niles Police Department in Illinois announced that Sgt. Joseph Lazo had become the latest victim of a July crash in Texas that left three current and former law enforcement officials dead on impact and sent nine, including Lazo, to the hospital.

Lazo was just 39 years old.

“Missed, but never forgotten”

According to Breitbart, the news was announced by the Niles Police Department in a Facebook post Friday.

“It is with great sadness that we report the loss of Sergeant Joseph Lazo. Sergeant Lazo passed away last night due to medical complications stemming from a motorcycle accident that occurred last week in Texas,” the department said, as Breitbart reported. “Sgt. Lazo will be missed, but never forgotten.”

The department also asked that Americans keep “the Lazo Family and the Niles Police Department in your prayers as we try and manage emotions during this extraordinarily difficult time.”

A tragedy in Texas

The incident that took Lazo’s life occurred in mid-July, when the Thin Blue Line motorcycle club, an organization made up of active and retired lawmen, was out for what the group later described as a “leisurely” ride in Kerr County, Texas. “They were heading back to Bandera when a car traveling from Medina toward Kerrville crossed over the center line and stuck several of the motorcycles head-on,” the club said in a July 17 statement, according to local ABC affiliate KTXS 12.

The car was allegedly being driven by 28-year-old Ivan Robles Navejas, an illegal alien who was allowed to remain in the country as a result of President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, according to Breitbart.

Three club members died at the scene. According to Breitbart, they’ve been identified as 48-year-old retired officer Joseph “GT” Paglia, 74-year-old former airline pilot Jerry “Wings” Harbour, and retired U.S. Army officer Michael “Psycho” White.

Back behind bars

According to San Angelo LIVE!, Navejas was subsequently taken into custody on “three counts of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and six counts of intoxication assault. He is also being held on an immigration violation,” San Angelo LIVE! noted.

It isn’t Navejas’ first run-in with the law, however. In 2018, the DACA recipient was served with a warrant for “aggravated assault with a deadly weapon,” San Angelo LIVE! reported, and in 2016, he was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

The 28-year-old is currently being held in Kerr County Jail, according to Breitbart. His bail has been set at $500,000.
