Police officer convicted of murder for shooting suicidal man

An Alabama police officer who fatally shot a suicidal man was convicted of murder on Friday.

Huntsville police officer William “Ben” Darby, faces 20 years to life in prison for the slaying of Jeffrey Parker in 2018, the Washington Examiner reported.

Prosecutors said that the shooting was unjustified and that Darby “had no business being a police officer,” but Darby’s attorneys argued that Parker was threatening himself and officers at the scene.

Officer says man was threatening officers

Parker had called police to his home and said he intended to kill himself. When they arrived, they found Parker with a gun to his head. Darby shot Parker with a shotgun.

The mayor of Huntsville and Darby’s fellow officers criticized the guilty verdict, saying that Darby made a difficult judgment call when he pulled the trigger. Police chief Mark McMurray said that the local police were in “the first stages of shock” at the conviction.

“While we thank the jury for their service in this difficult case, I do not believe Officer Darby is a murderer,” he said. “Officers are forced to make split-second decisions every day, and Officer Darby believed his life and the lives of other officers were in danger. Any situation that involves a loss of life is tragic. Our hearts go out to everyone involved.”

Mayor Tommy Battle said that Darby “has the same appeal rights as any other citizen and is entitled to exercise those rights.”

Defendant to appeal

The jury reached its verdict after just two days of deliberations. Another officer, Genisha Pegues, had testified that she was talking to Parker on the phone and that he didn’t pose a threat.

Parker’s family expressed gratitude for the verdict, saying they hope it encourages police to change how they respond to people with mental health problems.

“We’re extremely grateful for the verdict,” said the family attorney, Martin Weinberg. “We appreciate the district attorney’s office for the leadership and courage as well as the jury for their service.”

Darby, 28, will appeal the verdict, his lawyer said. He was released from jail on $100,000 bond.

The verdict comes as tensions around policing, crime, and race remain high nationwide, with some calling for police to be defunded and replaced with social workers.

  1. It is those who would wish to be social workers in situations like that one who need to have their heads examined.

  2. I would need to know why the Officer thought the police were in danger from the man with a gun to his head. Did he take the gun away from his head and threaten anyone with it? This story is very sketchy with any info about the incident. I wouldn’t know anything with the info written here. I am first on the Police’s side when something like this happens. I’m sure there was too much said or revealed to include in the story. However that is why people not on the jury that jump to conclusions and holler “Defund The Police”. To say that and want Social Workers in these cases are just stupid. I agree with MR. Wolfers’ comment on that.

    1. You have never seen a killer point a gun at himself and then turn the gun on someone else. You need to watch cops, live PD, most dangerous and other programs like that. You also need to ride along with you local police department so you can learn something.

  3. You Might Like
  4. Send social workers to them and watch them get stabbed to death or they would be.killed by a gum or anything else they can pick up and kill. Officers when are called to anyone mentally unstable should send social worker. The police wouldn’t have to worry about being accused of killing someone. Family should quit calling police to take care of them and at the end the person dies. Family members take care of your own.

  5. Social workers aren’t in the position of enforcing ANYTHING, they make bad judgments almost evert damn day with families itself and you damn idiots want THEM to act as law enforcement ? what kind of drugs are you on to even suggest such an idea we should defund the people who come up with this crap. We need police to do the job they’ve had for a hundred years to serve and protect the public and deal with killers and the scum of society SOMETHING NO SOCIAL WORKER IS EVEN REMOTELY CAPEABLE OF DOING, KEEP THE POLICE AND FOR CRYING OUT LOUD BACK THEM UP WITH EVERY DOLLAR AND REAL LEADERSHIP.

  6. I would like to see the body cam footage. Also, I would like to see the transcripts from the case before I make my mind up on guilty.

  7. Police officers in every state and city need to quit now. If they are going to find officers guilty for doing their jobs we might as well just let all the 7% of the 13 % kill each other and keep the officers safe and out of jail or fired. Just 2 weeks without police officers then America would learn and they would learn fast. I was an Officer for over 20 years and now there is no way in hell I would become and officer. You have to fight the demoncRATs, antifa, blm and the idiot white people who do not have the common sense to no follow them.
Anyone who in in law enforcement now better get out or be fired or prosecuted for doing our job. Lets jus hire blacks to be officers and then see the demoncRATs blm and antifa react. I am sure you saw the N.O. La. officers (who were black) joining in with the loiters during hurricane Katrina. If you want to see the truth watch live PD, court TV, cops, most dangerous and other programs like them. You will then see who commits the majority of the crimes and who resist arrest the most and drive like maniacs in high speed chases. Watch and see the uncivilized actions by all people and see the tough and impossible jobs officers have. Better yet contact you local police department and go on a ride along program and learn something that will open you eyes. All elected officials local, state and federal need to do this once every six months and be deputized. They also need to make arrest when their is a violation of the law and see how they can defuse the situation. HA HA.
