Even after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently unveiled relaxed guidelines on mask use for vaccinated Americans, some prominent Democrats are still in favor of strict mandates.
For her part, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) appears poised to raise the stakes by considering whether to ban access to the House floor for lawmakers who refuse to wear a mask or receive a COVID-19 vaccination.
“Endangerment to other people”
As the Epoch Times reported, Pelosi declared during a press conference this week that she is prepared to “wait for them to be vaccinated,” calling those House members who have not gotten their shots an “endangerment to other people, including staff people here.”
Her remarks on the subject came in response to a handful of Republican lawmakers who ditched their masks after the new CDC guidelines were released, thus violating Pelosi’s longstanding rule.
Four members of the Republican caucus were subsequently assessed $500 fines and another seven received warnings, according to Fox News.
“What is this, the honor system?” she asked. “The honor system, as to whether someone has been vaccinated? Do you want them breathing in your face on the strength of their honor?”
Taking her outrage to the next level, she imagined arriving “at a place where we say” to unvaccinated Congress members “don’t even come to the floor” for a House vote.
“It’s not based in science”
“We have facilities up above in the gallery where people can come to vote,” she advised.
Pelosi insisted that the issue is “about science and governance,” stressing her desire to “make sure that the House of Representatives chamber is not a Petri dish because of the selfishness of some not to be vaccinated because it requires us to wear a mask.”
Of course, many of her critics say that her hard-line position is actually undermining the public’s confidence in science.
Brett Giroir, who served as a member of the COVID-19 task force under former President Donald Trump, took aim at the speaker’s reasoning during a recent Fox News Channel appearance.
“The rule of speaker Pelosi is pure political theater,” he asserted. “It’s not based in science.”
