Pelosi says Biden should not ‘legitimize a conversation’ with Trump by agreeing to a debate

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign has asserted that he will debate President Donald Trump ahead of Election Day — but not everyone in the party appears to believe it is a good idea.

In a statement on Thursday, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) made the case for the former vice president to skip all presidential debates this year, the Washington Examiner reported.

“I don’t think there should be any debates,” she said, citing Trump’s perceived flaws as a sufficient reason to call them off.

“Evidence, data, facts”

Of course, Biden has faced relentless scrutiny regarding his advanced age and speculation that he could be experiencing a concerning level of cognitive decline.

Calling him a “puppet” of the Democratic Party’s more progressive faction, Republican National Convention speakers like U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) spent much of the week portraying Biden as an ineffective candidate.

The House speaker, however, denied her motivation for encouraging Biden to skip the debates had anything to do with her party’s nominee.

“I do not think that the president of the United States has comported himself in the way that has any association with truth,” she said, according to the Examiner. “Evidence, data, and facts. I wouldn’t legitimize a conversation with him, nor a debate in terms of the presidency of the United States.”

“Looks forward to doing the same”

In response, the Biden campaign expressed agreement with Pelosi “on her views of the President’s behavior” while distancing from her controversial suggestion.

“But just as she has powerfully confronted that behavior in the Oval Office and the Cabinet Room, Joe Biden looks forward to doing the same on the debate stage,” a statement from the campaign read.

Nevertheless, renewed speculation has fueled the Republican Party’s dismissal of Biden as a candidate in hiding for the duration of the campaign.

“President Trump’s passion, energy, and debate skills are unmatched,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) declared, according to The Hill. “It’s no surprise that Pelosi wants to keep Biden in the basement.”

Trump campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh said that Biden is “getting lots of advice from Nancy Pelosi and others who want him to bail out on encounters with President Trump completely,” Fox News reported. It is not surprising that a growing number of voters are starting to wonder if he has something to hide.
