President Joe Biden and his administration have sought to skirt questions about a growing immigration crisis — or deny that it even exists.
For her part, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) recently shared her belief that the real scandal involves those Americans who are starting to sound the alarm about an ongoing surge at the nation’s southern border.
“Now they have to change the subject”
During a recent news conference, Pelosi suggested that Republicans are simply desperate to find a line of attack against the president and are using a spike in migration numbers to achieve their goal.
As she spoke on Thursday, her GOP counterpart, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), demonstrated that the two parties appear to be experiencing totally different realities when it comes to the issue of immigration policy.
Pelosi brushed off the border controversy as a mere contrivance of Republican leaders, citing recent outrage over the administration’s supposed decision to “cancel” children’s author Dr. Seuss as part of her argument.
“I guess their Dr. Seuss approach didn’t work for them,” she said, according to Fox News. “Now they have to change the subject.”
McCarthy, on the other hand, described the situation on the border as dangerous and preventable.
“That’s just in this community”
“The migrants are sometimes armed,” he said. “In the last two weeks, they’ve had to shut down the schools because armed migrants are out. In January, multiple officers were shot. That’s just in this community.”
Furthermore, the GOP leader noted that border patrol agents apprehended about 100,000 migrants in February — the highest number since former President Donald Trump addressed a 2019 border crisis.
While the Biden administration has received significant criticism from conservatives over its immigration policies, some on the left are also outraged over the president’s decision to reopen child migrant detention facilities. A record number of children are currently being kept in the custody of Customs and Border Protection, including some who were held beyond the 72-hour limit in facilities originally designed for adults.
Nevertheless, Pelosi doubled down on her defense of the White House, insisting: “I trust the Biden administration’s policy to be based on humanitarian and love of children rather than political points or red meat for their — for their Republican base.”
Based on their public statements on the matter, the Biden–Pelosi immigration plan apparently boils down to flooding the border and then pretending there is no problem.
