Pelosi doubles down on efforts to pass controversial election reform bill

Fox News host Tucker Carlson warned Monday night that a new bill proposed by Democrats would “enshrine fraud” and make it impossible to have fair election ever again. Even still, the Dems are hammering it home.

Over the objections of critics, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is redoubling efforts to pass the controversial For the People Act, Just the News reports.

Also known as H.R. 1, the bill would, according to Pelosi, empower ordinary people against “special interests.” She even suggested that the recent Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol added urgency to its passage.

“The status of H.R. 1 is that it is in an exalted position,” Pelosi said recently, according to Just the News. “It is a priority for us.”

Democrat policy points

But critics of the bill say that it’s a straightforward and partisan power grab that usurps the ability of states to set their own election laws, essentially putting the federal government in charge of elections.

The bill is filled with policies that are liable to benefit Democrats: it prohibits restrictions on mail-in voting and ensures voting rights for convicted felons not currently in prison, for example, calls for automatic voter registration, and asks Congress to seek statehood for Washington, D.C., according to Just the News and Fox.

Carlson, for his part, said that the bill would further erode trust in elections, inflaming the anger that fed into the Capitol riot, by erasing basic assurances of integrity and establishing effectively one-party rule. A part of the bill, he noted, says that states cannot require “any form of identification” to obtain absentee ballots.

“If H.R. 1 passes, all 50 states will be California — the entire country will have ballot harvesting and mail-in voting. Think about that,” Carlson opined, according to Fox.

“Politician Protection”

The bill passed the House previously, but met resistance in the last session from Republicans including Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who described it as the “Democrat Politician Protection Act.”

The measure’s Democratic sponsor, John Sarbanes (D-MD), has now formally reintroduced it.

Echoing his fellow Dems, Sarbanes claims it will somehow make America more democratic. “Americans across the country were forced to overcome rampant voter suppression, gerrymandering and a torrent of special-interest dark money just to exercise their vote and their voice in our democracy,” he said, according to Just the News.

Republicans are now in the minority, weakening their position, but they could conceivably block the bill if Democrats don’t kill the filibuster.
