Pelosi faces new pressure from her own party to accept $1.8T GOP stimulus deal

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has maintained a firm stance in support of a multi-trillion dollar coronavirus stimulus deal, contributing to stalled negotiations that have prevented a compromise with Republican leaders.

Now, even members of her own party are pleading with Pelosi to accept the nearly $2 trillion proposal being offered by the White House, as Business Insider reports.

Losing their businesses

It has become increasingly clear over recent weeks that a second stimulus package is unlikely to pass before Election Day, with Pelosi continually unable to reach a deal in her talks with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Now, according to Business Insider, some House Democrats and other prominent members of the party have begun to speak out against the speaker’s stalemate in favor of a deal that will help millions of Americans struggling from the impact of the pandemic.

Mnuchin has offered a $1.8 trillion package that includes stimulus checks for Americans and an extra $400 in weekly benefits for unemployed citizens.

Among those on the other side of the aisle who are vocally supporting the GOP proposal are U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang.

Khanna, who is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, spoke to Business Insider about his views, citing “immigrant families at risk of losing their restaurants and businesses they’ve built for 30 years” as a factor in his desire to see a stimulus bill approved.

“They have no idea”

For her part, Pelosi remained committed to her position, as she made clear in a pointed response to a question from CNN’s Wolf Blitzer this week regarding her resistance to further compromise.

“Honest to God, I can’t get over it, because Andrew Yang, he’s lovely — Ro Khanna, he’s lovely,” she said during the on-air interview on Tuesday. “But they have no idea of the particulars. They have no idea of what the language is here.”

While both parties agree that another round of stimulus checks is necessary, there is plenty of daylight on other issues. President Donald Trump has signaled that he is eager to sign another stimulus bill into law, but some Senate Republicans remain reluctant to approve more spending after passing the massive CARES Act earlier in the year.

“Nancy Pelosi couldn’t care less about the American People or the great American Worker,” Trump tweeted on Thursday, according to Fox Business. “She should approve needed STIMULUS now. Most other Dems agree. Republicans are ready to go, I am ready to sign!!!”

Pelosi might still try to put the blame on Trump and the GOP, but it appears even the Democrats are starting to see where the problem truly lies.
