After watching protests nationwide spiral out of control and hearing the increasingly loud calls to “defund the police,” arguments for stricter gun control sound more unreasonable than ever.
Apparently, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) didn’t receive that memo… Pelosi decided to mark the fourth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub mass shooting with renewed calls for more gun control, Fox News reported Friday.
Pelosi calls for more gun control
On June 12, 2016, gunman Omar Mateen, who had pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State group, gunned down dozens of innocent people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, killing 49 and wounding 53 others before being killed himself by police.
In reference to the horrific massacre, Pelosi said in a statement on Friday: “We honor the 49 beautiful souls murdered and 53 injured in a stunning act of hatred and bloodshed at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. Four years later, the pain remains all too real for the Orlando community, the survivors and the loved ones of those who were killed, but our resolve to end the scourge of gun violence remains unwavering.”
“In too many places, the epidemics of gun violence and hatred have stolen too many innocent people and left too many families suffering unimaginable loss. It is our responsibility to protect our communities and keep our children safe,” the Speaker continued, going on to reference several pieces of gun control legislation passed by the House that have yet to be addressed in the Republican-controlled Senate.
“The men and women murdered at Pulse were there to enjoy an evening of music, dancing, and celebration in a place of safety and solidarity; they had the right to live free from the fear of gun violence and hate,” Pelosi added. “Leader McConnell must listen to the will of the American people, end his partisan obstruction and finally bring H.R. 8 and H.R. 1112 up for a vote.”
Gun sales up amid lockdowns and rioting
Except, as noted earlier, it would seem to be Pelosi that is ignoring the “will of the American people.” The New York Daily News reported that gun sales have surged dramatically to record-setting levels over the past few months — especially for first-time buyers — in response to both the pandemic lockdowns and the recent lawlessness and inaction from police departments.
Meanwhile, amid all of the chaos, far-left activists are demanding the abolishment and defunding of police departments across the country. While most elected Democrats have refrained from completely embracing that frightening idea, they have put forward a mixed-bag of proposals that would reduce funding for police and tie their hands with regulations that would hamper the ability to respond effectively to lawless rioting and looting — and even mass shootings.
President Donald Trump has taken notice of the calls for more gun control in conjunction with calls for abolishing the police, who Democrats insist will protect the disarmed populace. He rightly pointed out the insanity of that duality with a tweet, writing, “The Radical Left Democrats: First they try to take away your guns. Then they try to take away your police!”
Not a good combo
Fox News noted that Troy Slaten, a criminal defense attorney in Los Angeles, has considered the full implications of the Democratic wishes for more gun control combined with few, if any, police, and warned that the combination had “the potential for a flurry of dangerous unintended consequences like a rise in private militias, private security cooperatives, and vigilantism.”
“If people don’t have police to rely on, they will take the protection of their family and property into their own untrained hands with potentially deadly consequences,” the attorney added. “If we combine strict gun control laws with no community policing to respond to calls for service, it would appear to be a recipe for an explosion in crime.”
He is absolutely correct, and if it wasn’t already obvious that Speaker Pelosi is completely out of touch with the average American citizen, her call for more gun control amid the ongoing lawlessness and a push for even fewer police officers on the streets only serves to amplify her arrogant aloofness from reality.
