On Sunday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told ABC News personality George Stephanopoulos that Americans should be subjected to even more coronavirus-related edicts, as Breitbart reports.
“Is it time to mandate the wearing of masks across the country?” Breitbart quoted Stephanopoulos as asking the longtime San Francisco Democrat.
“Definitely long overdue for that,” Pelosi said in response. “My understanding is that the Center for Disease Control has recommended the use of masks but not require it because they don’t want to offend the president,” she alleged, according to Breitbart, adding:
The president should be an example. Real men wear masks. Be an example to the country and wear the mask. It’s not about protecting yourself; it’s about protecting others.
Pelosi slams administration
Stephanopoulos, it is worth noting, was not wearing a mask during the interview, and while Pelosi did have one on, it was pulled down well below her mouth.
“It’s time for this administration to take this seriously,” Pelosi said earlier in the interview. “As Dr. Fauci said, we have serious problems ahead. Take this seriously.”
In support of her declaration of concern, Pelosi stated, “We are 4% of the world’s population, we are 25% of the cases and the deaths … We have the worst record of any country in the world.”
The coronavirus tally that has been maintained by John Hopkins University confirms the speaker’s claim that the United States has indeed suffered roughly a quarter of global COVID-19 deaths.
Coronavirus data in question
However, many have questioned the accuracy of the statistics in relation to the pandemic. The New York Post reported in May on a leak of documents from China’s military showing that cases and deaths in that country were being massively undercounted.
What’s more, while Pelosi was harsh in her criticism of President Donald Trump and his approach to the virus, she has had nothing critical to say about the throngs of demonstrators who, in shoulder-to-shoulder fashion, took to the streets for weeks following the death of George Floyd.
Thousands have been seen gathering in major cities across the country to protest, in blatant disregard of the CDC’s social distancing guidelines.
The demonstrations have frequently devolved into violent riots, with Business Insider reporting on June 10 that looters had destroyed some 70 coronavirus testing centers.
Pelosi’s silence on the obvious public health risks posed by mass protests is just another in a long line of the hypocritical double standards that seem to be a hallmark of her party.
