House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) lost her temper yet again with Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Tuesday after he spoke out against her re-imposed mask mandate in the Capitol.
Pelosi said she will follow Capitol Physician Brian Monahan’s guidance in forcing House members–vaccinated and unvaccinated–to mask up once more due to the delta variant of the coronavirus. The CDC issued guidance that even vaccinated Americans should wear masks in crowded indoor spaces when transmission in their community was “significant” or “substantial.”
“That’s the purview of the Capitol Physician … the mandate from him. I have nothing to say about that except we honor it,” Pelosi said Wednesday to reporters.
On Tuesday, the District of Columbia was classified as only having “moderate” spread, which would not fall under the new CDC guidance for masking, but that classification suddenly changed to substantial on Wednesday–coincidentally, after the mask mandate was implemented in the Capitol and the White House.
McCarthy: Mask guidance not science
“Make no mistake — The threat of bringing masks back is not a decision based on science, but a decision conjured up by liberal government officials who want to continue to live in a perpetual pandemic state,” McCarthy tweeted Tuesday night.
When reporters asked Pelosi about the tweet, she said of McCarthy, “He’s such a moron.” She then got into a vehicle and was driven away from a climate event taking place at the Capitol.
McCarthy is not nearly the only one who doesn’t like the new mask guidance or think it’s necessary, including some on the left.
Liberal CNN host John Berman had words with CDC Director Rochelle Walensky on Wednesday, saying, “You can understand the frustration in those of us who are vaccinated saying, ‘Why the hell do I have to pay the price for this?’”
The delta variant of the coronavirus pandemic has been causing more breakthrough infections in vaccinated individuals, including some lawmakers and government staffers.
But although there have been more cases, hospitalizations and deaths have been almost entirely among unvaccinated adults. Since all adults now can get free vaccines, it should be people’s own responsibility if they choose not to do so and they get a severe case of COVID-19.
Re-instituted mask mandates and vaccine mandates that are cropping up because of the delta virus are absolutely a power grab, as McCarthy recognizes. In fact, former FDA official Scott Gottlieb said Wednesday that he thought the U.S. would be through the worst of the delta variant in another two to three weeks, which really makes this mask nonsense pointless.
There is no reason any vaccinated person should be made to wear a mask, and children have so little risk that masking schoolchildren–as the CDC has advocated–makes no sense either. Citizens should stand up against this intrusion on freedom and refuse to comply.
