House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is going all in on blaming President Donald Trump for the coronavirus crisis.
In a private phone call Monday, Pelosi told Democrats in her caucus that “it was ‘almost sinful’ how his administration had failed to live up to promises to make testing available to all Americans and quickly address the mask, gown and glove supply shortage in hospitals across the country,” Politico reported, citing multiple sources who were on the call.
Pelosi and other Democrats and the media have downplayed the role of China in the outbreak while largely faulting President Trump for the grim toll in America.
The speaker has consistently accused Trump of failing to respond adequately to the crisis — she claimed that he was “fiddling” in March while Americans suffered — and the Democrat appears to be zeroing in on that political strategy.
Pelosi doubles down
In an open letter released on her website Tuesday, Pelosi blamed Trump’s “incompetent reaction” for the millions of jobs and thousands of lives lost to the coronavirus and the draconian measures taken to combat it.
The Speaker laid out a list of President Trump’s alleged errors, from a failure to secure adequate testing and medical equipment, to ignoring early warnings to aggressively contain the virus. The Democrat called on Americans to “ignore” the president’s “lies” and listen to scientific experts instead. Pelosi replicated the letter in a series of tweets as well.
The letter comes as Democrats accuse Trump of selfishly jeopardizing lives by seeking to open the economy back up over the objections of various governors.
Democrats have generally endorsed a slow, gradual approach to relaxing lockdown restrictions that caters closely to current scientific data and modeling, over more broad considerations like the economy, mental health, and civil liberties. Meanwhile, millions of Americans have lost their jobs to “stay at home” orders,
Pelosi slams “illegal” funding cut to WHO
As Democrats fault the president for the pandemic’s devastation, Trump is targeting the World Health Organization, a United Nations agency that has been accused of helping China cover up the outbreak. The president announced Tuesday that he will cut funding to the WHO, a decision that Pelosi called “dangerous” and vowed to oppose.
With Trump’s re-election now hinging on how he handles the coronavirus pandemic, Democrats and the media are determined to make the case that he failed. The president is fighting back against those efforts, insisting that he has done a good job and that the “Fake News” is covering him unfairly.
While Pelosi blames Trump, Congress skipped town over the coronavirus, opting instead to work in “pro-forma” sessions as they negotiate the next round of coronavirus stimulus spending. President Trump threatened Wednesday night to forcefully adjourn Congress — an action that no president has ever taken — so he can make recess appointments.
Where the president has failed, criticism is not only permitted but deserved. But as Democrats bend over backward to make excuses for China and the WHO, it’s evident what’s going on. This is pure politics.
