Pelosi pushes new bill on 25th Amendment as Dems speculate about Trump’s health: Report

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced on Friday Democrats’ intentions to form a bipartisan commission to give Congress the power to remove a president using the 25th Amendment, Fox News reported.

The development came just a day after Pelosi questioned President Donald Trump’s health in the wake of a positive coronavirus test and hospitalization last week.

Creating a process

Pelosi first mentioned the 25th Amendment in conjunction with Trump’s health on Thursday during her weekly press briefing, leading to speculation on the right that House Democrats would try to use the amendment to talk about removing Trump.

“Tomorrow, by the way, tomorrow, come here tomorrow,” Pelosi said, according to a separate report from Fox. “We’re going to be talking about the 25th Amendment.

“I think that the public needs to know the health condition of the president,” Pelosi added. “There’s one question that he refused to answer…when was his last negative test?”

On Friday, however, Pelosi said the legislation being introduced was not about removing Trump, but about having something in place for future presidents. Bill author Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) has been trying to get the legislation approved since 2017, Fox noted.

“This is not about President Trump,” Pelosi insisted Friday, according to Fox. “He will face the judgment of the voters. But he shows the need for us to create a process for future presidents.”

“Crazy Nancy” and “Sleepy Joe”

According to Fox, the 25th Amendment requires the vice president and a majority of the president’s cabinet to request his removal, and two-thirds of both houses of Congress must approve the action if challenged by the ousted president.

But a loophole in the amendment allows “another body” that is designated by Congress to make the determination about a president’s fitness, and that body only needs a simple majority to approve the removal. Democrats want to now establish that body, Fox reports.

Trump, for his part, said after hearing about the bill that it’s clearly aimed at getting Democratic presidential nominee “Sleepy Joe” Biden removed if he wins in next month’s election.

The bill won’t make it through a Republican Senate, however, and Trump surely won’t sign it. We can only hope the Senate is still Republican-controlled after Nov. 3.
